Pinnacle Expression is able to automatically read the dates when the video was shot from an avi file that I captured out of a DV cam. How does it do that? Is there another authoring program that can do that?

you can read the dates to a text file, or subtitle text and you can make the dates as switchable subtitles using for example dvd-lab pro. tools:
