I have 7 HP pavilion recovery discs. Instead of having the 7 cds, can I save all the files from the cds to my harddrive, then burn them onto 1 dvd? Will the installation still work or do they need to be on cd for the recovery to work?

The only way to know for sure is to try it. You would need to copy the contents of each cd to the root of the dvd.
I don't know the technical terms for it but the first disc should have boot-up information on it which would need to be copied to the DVD's boot section. using nero choose DVD(boot) then under "source of boot image data" select the first recovery cd.

I have no ideas if it'll work, but it can't take longer than a few minutes to try.

You can try it, but I suspicion the computer will keep asking for you to insert disc 2, 3, etc. and completely ignore the other discs that are copied to DVD.

use a program to creat an image (.iso) file for each cd. so when you are done you will have 7 iso files on your hard drive. then burn all of those to a dvd (assuming they will fit on one dvd). next you will need to download a program called Daemon Tools, or something similar. it can be found in the tools section to the left. this program will create a virtual drive that will let you mount each image. so if you ever need to use it, you will mount the first disc first, then it will ask for the second disc, and you mount that...etc.

Just got a reply from Hp support, "it is not possible to create Recovery DVD, by copying the Recovery CDs to the hard drive and then burning a DVD from it. This is due to the fact that each Recovery CDs have some important boot-able information for the next CD and that information cannot be copied to the hard drive or DVD."
