  1. I have a few tapes I would like to put on dvd you can't get, and when I try to capture the VHS to DVD i get an error about a signal. Is there some sort of "decoder" I could run it though first? If so, what is and where can i get it!!

  2. That's VHS tape copy protection. You need a TBC, clarifier, stabilizer, etc. to defeat it.

  3. more than likely, the tapes have macrovision on them and most/all dvd recorders (assuming standalones) do not all copying of copyrighted material.

There is a thing by the name of sima that defeats this. Do a search through the forum for sima and you will get some good information

True, but that's if you're copying a Macrovision protected source to an immune VCR. That same Macrovision immune VCR will still output the copy protection if played into a DVD recorder.

I've used the device shown here...

...for a number of years and have found that, for the price, it works very well for transferring copy protected VHS tapes to a DVD recorder.

Could you please tell me what's the IN/OUT cable connector type? I can't see it from the small picture.......is it composite (yellow RCA)?

I normally use a VCR to output to MPEG2 thru a Pinnactle TV capture card. Do you know if this device will work with my worflow?

    Thanks in advance!

It's an RCA connection. I have only used it with a DVD recorder or a VCR, but I imagine it should work with a capture card because the device masks the Macrovision copy protection before it gets to the recording unit.

  9. Well, I use a macro free dvd player to input into my dvd recorder. This works well. VHS is another situation though. For that when I needed it I just used cheap boxes that did the trick. They are a bit cheaper in HK.
