I have a few tapes I would like to put on dvd you can't get, and when I try to capture the VHS to DVD i get an error about a signal. Is there some sort of "decoder" I could run it though first? If so, what is and where can i get it!!

That's VHS tape copy protection. You need a TBC, clarifier, stabilizer, etc. to defeat it.

more than likely, the tapes have macrovision on them and most/all dvd recorders (assuming standalones) do not all copying of copyrighted material.
There is a thing by the name of sima that defeats this. Do a search through the forum for sima and you will get some good information -
