  1. I know years ago that video would sometimes have slight jitters on playback because the hard drive would recalibrate itself regularly and data couldn't read for a brief instant during playback.

    There are SCSI hard drives that are known as A/V compliant which recalibrate themselves in a way that allows data to be written or read without interruption due to the recalibration process.

    Does anyone know if ordinary IDE hard drives are now A/V compliant also, and which models? I want to capture and play video from a hard drive without interruption due to recalibration of the drive.

    I agree provided your system is capable of utilizing abilities of new drive.
    You can bypass some mb limitations by using external firewire/usb
