  1. I'm going to buy the Seinfeld DVDs, and want to back them up. I've done movie backups and its been problem free. I like to keep it simple.

So is it the same principal for episode DVDs, I basically rip, encode and burn. And what if I wanted episodes only w/o the extras, is it also the same principal as movie only dvd backups?

Typically, it's the same. If you use DVDShrink, you do the same things, like removing audio tracks and stuff.

The only challenge in episode DVDs is that they will typically hold 3 hours of content (4x45min) so maintaning quality is difficult.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

    No.

Movies tend to use high bitrate, while episode discs use lower and medium bitrates.

Use this knowledge wisely when you start to compress a DVD9 to DVD5.

Well the problem is that most transcoding programs are set up for "main movie", and sometimes the episode discs have each episode in its own titleset which can be tricksy.

    Read those guides.

sometimes it's better to split the episodes from 1 DVD into 2 keeping menu's on both DVD's to maintain high quality . With most episodic splits I've seen you can keep the episodes at original quality and maybe compress the menu's a little

due to the cost of blanks these days it's worth considering splitting instead of affecting the quality by compressing them all onto 1 DVD
