Hi-
All ESS Vibrato chipset players, such as your Philips model, have serious problems playing XviDs that used custom matrices (matrices other than the standard H.263 or MPEG), and the symptoms you describe are typical of that. As far as I know, though, there's no way to tell what matrix was used. I don't have that player, so I don't know for sure what other issues it has. However, you might open the XviD in a recent version of GSpot and look around to see if it used any settings that your standalone either won't play at all, or has trouble with. It'll also tell you which version of XviD was used. I got the same sort of thing the other day when playing an old XviD that was version XviD0030. Mine uses the Sigma Designs chipset, and it was the first time I'd played such an old XviD on it. Maybe it was some other setting that caused it, but since the players using the Sigma Designs chipset can play just about any matrix, I figured it was because of the old XviD version used. Could be wrong about that, though. These days most are either 0035 or 0036, and standalones don't have problems with them.
And yes, reencoding it should make it play correctly. I'm assuming it plays fine on your computer. -
Such an old version? XviD0030 was 1.0RC4 from Apr 5th 2004. There is plenty of stuff using much older versions, including stuff using builds from 2002 that didn't even include a bitstream version.
MPEG4Modifer can tell you what quant matrix was used.
XviD0001 was added 2002/10/17 in case anyone is interested. -
Oh, not so old then. It has me baffled, though, as it's the first time I've ever seen anything like that on my player. I've tested probably a dozen or so custom matrices on mine and only one gave me even a little bit of trouble (Fox Home Networks), and even that one just produced some green blotches every once in a while. I'll run it through MPEG4Modifier to see what it says about it. Thanks celtic_druid.
