  1. I used to be able DVDs at 4x on DVD-R and go on IE and my comp would run fine, no freezing. Now everytime I burn the buffer level fluctuates so much and my comp goes real slow. If I have almost nothing open it still has that problem but rarely. I have an AMD 2500+ with 512mb DDR and a 120gb hdd partitioned into a C: drive 20 gb in space for just apps and the other partition is for files.

I've tried new 8x ridata dvd-rs because they were on sale and the same thing happened. I've burned 50-100 without that problem.

  3. What would that mean? I don't know too much about burning but I can understand easily if you explain.

You would want to check if your drive is enabled for DMA. Go to:Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE controllers. Check the primary and secondary controllers to see if DMA is enabled. If it's set to PIO, that's your problem. You should be able to enable it there. XP occasionally disables it when there is a problem reading discs.

  5. Its enabled on both IDEs. I'll try reinstalling those later on as the sticky suggests in this forum.

Try manually enabling the buffer in Nero, goto Preferences/UltraBuffer/manual Configuration and change it to 48MB, th ebuffer may be set to high

Or even better, when was the last time you did a DeFrag ??

  7. I Defrag all the time....So I should set the buffer low? It auto sets at 71mb but I set it at 80 thinking that higher buffer would stop this problem.

  8. What version of Nero and did you install XP SP2? I was using Nero 5.5 at home and at work and both were affected. At work Nero's buffer level fluctuated quite a bit during burning. At home I uninstalled SP2 and at work I upgraded to Nero 6.

1- Triple check PIO/DMA, that is the usual problem.
    2- Virus/trojan sucking up CPU or I/O.
3- Other program or quick launch sucking up CPU or tying up the I/O channel..
4- Uninstall/reinstall Nero, could be just a registry setting or two got screwed up, probably faster to do this than track it down.

Some of the quick launches use up rediculous amounts of CPU and I/O to be sitting there active all the time.

Just the order I check in.

  11. Ok I've done all that. I run task manager while burning and my memory and cpu usage seem to be fine. I'm going to install windows again with the upgrade install, no format.

Make sure DMA is enabled on the drives themselves, as well as on the IDE controllers.

(Or is this yet another thing that Microsoft, in their never-ending quest to "enhance" our "Windows Experience", has "helpfully" moved to some other location that they think is more "intuitive" than the place that everyone's gotten used to looking for it in for the last eight years?)
