  1. I get a bit confused with all this mpeg/avi stuff, etc.
I have a computer setup that copies DVD's just fine with DVD Xcopy.
I was planning on buying a set top recorder to copy 8mm/VHS from some old tape (I have Pinnacle Studio Deluxe, but want something a bit easier).
I will have to pass the signal from the set top boxes through a Sima CT-2 GoDVD! for the DVD to DVD copy.
Which has the better results?? The computer using an unknown compression rate, but not converting any of it to analog (I think)? Or, the set top to set top boxes going through the Sima? Does that setup convert to a lower quality signal then upconvert again?
I don't know about any of these conversions which is why I ask the question.

For DVD to DVDr, the computer wins evertime.

Why do you think the compression rate on the computer is unknown - this is one place where you should have the most control.

If you have a DVD (and I assume you have at this point, because you are looking to go DVD to DVD), then the computer cam make a bit for bit copy of a DVD-/+R, without recompressing. If you play from a settop player through to settop recorder, you will reencode and risk losing quality - there is no way around it.
