  1. I know that PAL 4:3 is 720x576, but what is PAL 16:9... thanks in advance.

  2. It's still 720x576 but with black borders at the top and bottom of the screen. The borders are roughly 85 pixels in size.

  3. No 16:9 PAL has no borders. The image is either stretched to fit a 16:9 TV set or letterboxed by the DVD player. Do not encode the file with borders.

Both use the same DVD resolution...... but the display pixel size is different:

    PAL
    720 X 576 encoded at 4:3 has a pixel size of 1.092:1 (w x h)
    720 X 576 encoded at 16:9 has a pixel ratio of 1.456:1

NOTE: Although DVD standard is 720 X 576 the 'viewable' part of the picture is only 704 wide (on a TV) ..hence the typical 8 wide border front and rear on a DVD.....plus that is also the true 4:3 area (well its 702 really but its close enough).

Its the PLAYBACK pixel resolution (approx 33% greater than a 4:3 pixel) that creates the widescreen picture.

Those same resolutions if converted to square pc based pixels become(calculated from 704 X 576 'viewable')

    720 X 576 @ 4:3 = 768 X 576
    720 X 576 @ 16:9 = 1024 X 576
