I am looking to buy my first DVD burner as I have just been on vacation and finished capturing all of my video onto my PC. I have been looking at the new Pioneer 107 but am also thinking about the OptoRite DD0405, which one is better? There is about a $60 price difference where I am (Pioneer dearer) but I don't think the OptoRite is dual layer compatible like the Pioneer.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks.
wendy.

I don't know where you are from but Newegg has the Pioneer 108 OEM for $81 + about $4 shipping. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=27-129-157&ATT=CD+DVD...C-pr1c3grabb3r
They also have the beige for a $1 less http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-129-156&depa=0 -

I recommend the Pioneer. It's worth the extra money, IMO. -
I've had the Pioneer 107 & 108, and have been happy with both.....

I would vote for the NEC 3500 first, the Pioneer 108 a close second, and the rest of the pack a distant third.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
I got the Otporite DD0405, and to be honest, i wish i had gone for a Pioneer or NEC.
When i got mine, there was a noticeable price differential, but now, theres not much in it, so I would spend the extra £10 - £20 and get a Pioneer.
I have never really been happy with my optorite, although it has burnt DVDs and CDs ok, it seems really slow in registering discs when you insert them, and it has now gone faulty and wont burn any DVDs at all. I am hoping to exchange it for a Pioneer or NEC when I hear back from my suppler.
The general concensus at these forums favours Pioneer and NEC, although there should be no reason why any DVD burner on the market should not work, a general consensus has got to be a good indication. -
Pioneer all the way. They are good, reliable burners.

For cross media compatibility (and that I've never had one go wrong on me), I'd say Pioneer too.
