Staples has 60GB Maxtor drives on sale for $40. They're only 2MB cache but I'll probably end up striping a couple of them if I get them. Looking around there doesn't seem to be much in the way of hard drives under $40. Any suggestions / caveats?

I think it would be OK for throwing together a inexpensive system. Can't tell the exact model, but some of the newer Maxtor models run very hot, not sure about the longevity.

But, it has a 1 year warranty. I just got a 80G Maxtor 6Y080L0 for $50 after rebate. I've had good luck with those. But I do back up important files.

    They're L01J060 drives.

No rebates on this one. $40+tax out the door. I usually don't mind rebates much but the no rebate part helps. I also picked up a couple of the 200Gb drives to add to my existing array, but I think I may return them and buy a couple WD2000JBs from NewEgg instead since the 4 200s I have are WD. Plus the OEM WDs have a 3yr warranty.

At $0.66 a GB there are better deals, just requires a greater investment up front. I just saw 200GB Seagates for $80 after a $50 mail-in at CompUSA. That's one of the better deals I've seen around. I don't like mail-ins much at all but I may bite at that since I need a few more 200GB drives.

COMPUSA has MAXTOR 60GB 2MB CACHE hard drive on sale for $30.00 after a $50.00 INSTANT REBATE. I was tempted into purchasing one but I think for now I have enough hard drives= 820 gbs.

Newegg does have some good bargains especially when some of the OEM hard drives come with a 3 year warranty. I got my 200 gb SATA hd from them.

Just saw that, but now they're sold out. I put it on my wish list. If they come in while they're still on sale I'll pick up a couple. Doubt you can get anything decent for less than $30. Of course I just said that about $40, so you never know.

    What is "enough hard drives"?

I've got about 3TB in IDE drives alone and I keep buying more in 200-250GB chunks. And no, only about 20-30GB is pr0n :P

Hrm... I have a tad over 300gb and its to much. To much translates to so much drive space you are tempted to be lazy, so lazy and not keep things in order.

I gotta call you on this one...
Are these drives all running at the same time including the 5+ optical drives you've got running?
Post a pic of your case... inside as well as out..

Hell, if I counted up ALL my HDs (including some 30 odd drives > 1g I would come close to 2+ TB

    makntraks

p.s. Flay - agreed - to much space online DOES make one lazy and somewhat inefficient..

p.s.s. Rally - the call out is in jest... just find it hard to believe that someone could have that much space available/used and not have some kind of storage manager to keep it all together.

Oh my no, they're not all in the same case

There is only 400-500GB of IDE drive space in that workstation at a time as the boot is a 74GB Raptor and there are also to 18GB SCSI drives in it taking up space. I am building up my old workstation to fit at least 4 or so 250GB drives in addition to the rest of my SCSI equipment. The rest get swapped in with a Vantec EZ Swap and then put in the closet when they're full.

Optical drives? Only one Pioneer 106 installed. The rest are FireWire.

I'd actually like to start using SATA drives more. With the external power connecter on my PSU and some extension bays carrying SATA ports I could just set the drive on the desk and not have to put it in a swap tray

I wouldn't pay anything for a Maxtor drive. I might mistakenly think it can retain data, and end up losing it
