Earlier in the year just before $ony (very quietly) announced that they were going to discontinue the 20GB PS3, there was much speculation that the newer versions of the 60GB would no longer have the Emotion Engine chip and would therefore no longer support backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games.
They have now stopped making the 60GB version as well and the only version being manufactured is the 80GB.
80GB PS3 absolutely does not have Emotion Engine chip and backward compatibility will only be available for certain games via emulation just like the 360 does with XBOX games.
Can anybody here verify the 60GB issue?
Do any of you have a newer version of the 60GB and if so does it play PS2 & PS1 games or do you have to download emulation?
I still have and play many PS1 & PS2 games, but both of my PS2's are on the verge of death.
I need a 60GB if I want to keep playing my old games, as my tastes in gaming are far from "mainstream" and there is very little chance that very many of my games will be deemed worthy of the emulation situation on the 80GB machines.
TIA!!!!

I think the American PS3s (non 80gb) do have the chip. Its the Euro PS3s that use software instead.

I thought so too, but can't find any confirmation...
Oddly, $ony doesn't have any info on their site about functionality loss in "new and improved" versions -- go figure!"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Anyway.....
I bought a 60GB model. They had several of each at BestBuy and you can tell just by looking at the back of the box.
Some 60GB say:
"COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE/MEDIA
-PLAYSTATION3 format software with either region number [1] or [ALL]
-PlayStation2 format software with the "" logo, PlayStation2 logotype and the NTSC U/C designation
-PlayStation format software with the PlayStation logo and the NTSC U/C designation"
and it goes on about CD, DVD, BD, SACD etc.
All 80GB and some 60GB models say this on the back of the box in bright orange text:
"This product may have more limited backward compatibility. However, this may improve with future firmware updates.""To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright
