I was just wondering, do players that support DivX generally support Xvid, and what is the difference between the formats?
I'm asking since I just ordered a DivX compatible DVD player, and I read in a user-review that it also supported Xvid, this was not stated in the details for the player however. Are they essentially the same, or could I experience problems playing an Xvid movie on my player?

Yes, most Divx players can also play Xvid. Both are Mpeg 4 codecs. Divx is a commercial product from Divx.com. Xvid is free and open source.

Almost all DivX player also support XviD. Even if it doesn't all you would need to do is reencode to DivX with virtualdub.
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

Would synch mostly occur on DVD to DivX, or XviD to DivX?
