  1. I need a DVD burner that is cheap but worthwile. Mainly need to use it for data recovery. You see my data hard drive stopped spinning, so if I can get it to spin for an hour or more back up will be the first thing I do.

    Any recommendations?

Also anyone know how to make a hard drive spinn again? Mine doesn't spin and makes beeps.

You are screwed. You may need to send this to a data recovery place. I've got a drive here, same problem. There is no way I could fix this myself without making it worse.

  3. I would recommend the NEC 2510.

About the HD, it is dead. I might need professional help (if you would like to spend money).

    Hope this help.

  5. IF you can find an identical drive and IF you're willing to risk THAT drive you might try pulling the controller board off of it and putting it on your machine to see if it boots. If so, you can retrieve the data. I've done this to some bad drives at work, but then this was easy there - we had 100 of the same machines to pull the board from!

If it's internal, a recovery joint will need to pull the drive apart in a clean room - big $$$.

    Honesty is the best policy.

On the upside, my dead drive serves as a nice paperweight.

  7. I've seen people claim success by putting their washed up hard drives in the freezer for a spell (no s#@!), then plugging 'em in for some quick data recovery before they croak again.

Dead drive ... or dead drive.
I'll try when I get some time.

  10. Ahhhh ....backup after the crash.... works so much better when its done b4 hand!. Might be better to backup to a hard drive as it will be quicker.. your old drive may not last very long, if it ever comes back.

    Think raid and mirroring.

  11. If I try the freezer trick, could that hurt it more? Like you say a dead drive is a dead drive. I'll try the freezer as long as that in it self won't erase data.

    Anyone know?

Also, I think I have it set to master on the IDE chain right now, do you think I should set it to slave?

Anyone know how much it costs to just take the platers out and put them into a different hardrive?

  12. If i was you get a LG DVD drive at www.newegg.com you can use DVD-RAM as a removable hard drive. Its very good to use as you can use a DVD-RAM disc as a hard drive.

Niche market. Not a lot of customers, but the equipment to do that job carries a high overhead cost.
