  1. Okay, I have tried everything I could find on the net about why my download are going soo slow! PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT! Here are all the details:

We moved, and set up our cable network at the new house correctly I think!

We have one computer in the office with the AOL Broadband box thing that comes with it when you sign up for Broadband. This Box thing has a "Lynksis" router with cales leading to my room aswell as my brothers room. This is how it was set up in the old house. Except for here, I have a new computer that is faster then my old one. My old one was a laptop that was 2.6ghz... My new one is a desktop with 2.8 ghz processor and twice as much of everything else my old one had.

In the old house, I would download at a rate of 100 KBs +... Here I am lucky to break 20. Today it went up to 50, then went back down after a few seconds!

What the heck is going on? I found a think that said to open the channels... I did this. Still no change... I dont have a firewall, so thats not affecting it.

LMK what you think I could do!

    Please!

    Check out DSL Reports http://www.dslreports.com/

They have speed tests as well as tweaks and tips that can help you find out where the problem lies. Sadly there might not be anything you can do, it may just be a matter of more people using cable in your area or just being farther away or having less bandwidth coming to your neighborhood.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

I dont have a firewall, so thats not affecting it.

Linksys routers have NAT firewalls. I would suggest you check with your local cable company to see if your cable signal is strong enough. Maybe you need a booster amp on the outside line. If you're splitting the signal with other tv sets in your home it can affect the cable signal strength. I had problems 4 years ago when I first got cable modem. The signal strength was not strong enough so they put in a big ass booster amp outside on the telephone line as well as on my home.

I grumbled with the cable company to make sure I was getting the service that I pay for. Also helps that my folks know the president & ceo of the cable company.

  5. This could be what wrong... We only moved down the street, so that not a big move... But in the old house, I think we had a specific line for the cable... This house may be just a split from the tv... Ill have to see

the split from the tv can effect it when the tv is on. it does suck signal. but not to the point where your d/l speeds are ugly. now the wiring in the house especialy from the main line might be something you might wanna look at. old wires and splitters. i would call the cable company specially since u pay every month to use their service to a certain standard. it's their job to make sure everything runs right.

Bearbegr, I think you have to start with a process of elimination (get the variables under control). You should be able to confirm or eliminate in-house line problems by hooking one cmputer directly to the cable modem (Box thing). I'm assuming your cable line comes into a cable modem which is then attached to the Linksys which then connects to you computers. Hook the computer closest to the cable modem directly to it, reboot, and try you downloads. If the speed is good, the problem is with the Linksys or the cable lines in your house. If the speed is bad, it's a cable company problem (no point test any further). Next hookup the Linksys and try that with one computer. Just work your way through the possible problem.

I split my cable line and don't have any problems. To many splits can lower the overall cable strength but the TV signals are on different frequencies and are less susceptible to splits that the TV programming is.

  8. Ill look into it and hook my PC up to the modem directly. I have 4 Tvs in the house, and 3 computers all hooked to the cable. I think everything comes from one cable line... So the cable company put in a booster thing... Still though downloads go sooo slow... I will let you know what I find.

  9. Okay, I unplugged the cable from the router and went directly to my PC... Still the same speeds! Now what?

Call your cable company to have them come out to check your cable signal strength. I'm thinking they'll probably have to put a booster amp outside your home or in your home. I have a booster amp in my home dedicated just for my roadrunner.

I have ran into this problem at times. If you moved your setup from one location to another, this is fairly common.

What I do first is what ViRaL1 suggested. Check your up/down speed with a speed test at this site or similar http://www.dslreports.com/.

Then I unplug the power from my cable modem and my router. Plug the cable modem back in and wait until the lights quit flashing. This means the modem is reset and reaquired the signal. Then plug in your router. It should auto setup also. Check your speed again.

If no improvement, go to your Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Area Connection> (Left Click)>Support>Repair.

If this doesn't work, you have little choice but to contact your cable ISP.

BTW, I wouldn't reccomend using the supplied software from the cable company to set up your cable connection for your modem. It is totally unessesary it most cases and just confuses your OS. WinXP is very easy to set up for cable. You don't need external programs. Also, you usually need a restart between major adjustments to your system to see that they are implemented.

I am presently on a laptop, behind a router and my down speed is 3539 Kbps and up is 467 Kpbs. It varies all the time. I tried all kinds of tweaks in the past and none of them did anything. Reseting the modem and router is a fairly regular thing, as the ISP downloads upgrades.

  15. Okay, I get home, and the cable guy is here waiting for me. He was a nice guy and all, but honestly he knew NOTHING about computers and the internet... I ended up helping him with his new computer! Anyways, he is here, and he is going through all this stuff, and he eventually comes to the conclusion that it was the router because he called the company and they found thier was not a signal problem. I was like NO, it not I have done every single thing possible to this fricken thing! So, thank my lucky stars another cable guy shows up because he thought he had to come here instead of the other guy... This guy knew stuff about the net and concluded that speeds did suck! And he gave us the new version of the Box for the modem aswell as he wanted to go outside and check our line or whatever... He then find a huge chunk is missing! This explains why sometimes its good and sometimes its bad! Now my speeds are WAY BETTER. After I dicked around with the modem somemore because the router did not want to recognize the new box.
