  1. Ok, according to https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=1446&Search=Search& this, my dvd player will play DVD-R & DVD-RW, however, it will not play DVD+R or DVD+RW. Now, how do I make sure that I am burning a DVD-R and not a DVD+R?

I am using TMPGEnc DVD Author. I poked around on it a bit, but couldn't figure out how to tell which I am doing.

Someone please help. I have already made one coaster, and would like to not make any more.

Look on the disc or case or spindle the discs came in. It will say dvd-r or dvd+r. If you have unmarked discs and still not sure, you can use dvdinfo to see what type of disc you are using.

  3. Damn it! I just bought 25 DVD's, and they are all "+R". I guess that means they are pretty much worthless to me.

    What is the difference anyway?

There's technical differences that are too detailed to get into. Needless to say, some dvd players will not read dvd+r media unless you burn them with a bitsetting option to make the dvd player see it as a dvd rom disc. Depending on you're burner, and what version of nero you use, this may be possible.

  5. I am using Nero version 6

  6. The problem I am having though is that once I author it with TMPGEnc DVD Author, it converts it into a VOB file and I don't know how to burn that via Nero. I tried burning it last night and just used TMPGEnc to do so. Is there a way to change the bitrate setting using TMPGEnc DVD Author?

You're not changing a bitrate. It's hard to explain, but you are changing what the media type appears to the dvd player. Most dvd players can read dvd+r media if they think it's a different type of disk. To burn VOB's in Nero, use Nero in DVD-Video mode. Copy the VOB, IFO, and BUP files to the video TS folder in the layout. If you're drive is capable of bitsetting, the option will appear in the Burn dialog box.

  8. Ok, I am still doing something wrong. I am using Nero in DVD-Video mode, and I found the VOB, IFO, and BUP files, and they are all in the Video TS folder. Once I try to "add files" in nero though, it tells me "Unable to insert:"

First make sure you are using Nero Burning Rom and not the Nero Express version. In Nero Burning Rom, in DVD video mode you will have three frames. Explore to the video_ts folder where the files are in the right frame. Select those files and drag them to the pink video_ts folder in the middle frame.

  10. First Steve, I really appreciate all this help.

Ok, I was using Express, so I changed to Burning Rom mode. I figured out where to add all the VOB, IFO, an BUP files, looks like I did all that correctly.

I am looking for the bitsetting, but am not sure what to look for. The burn dialog box talks about the burn speed and such, but I am not sure if I am looking in the wrong place for the bitsetting, or if it is just not there.

What dvd burner do you have? It may or may not support it.

Looks like your drive doesn't support bitsetting

One good thing out of all of this, you can burn dvd's in nero now.

  14. I was just reading that under the comments when I looked up the drive here. Bummer...

So all I have to do is buy the "-R" kind of DVD's and I shouldn't have a problem in the future?

  16. Ok, thanks again for all of your help Steve, I really appreciate it.

BTW, is there anything I can do with the "+R"'s? I heard that Alcohol 120% will allow you to backup PlayStation 2 games, do you know if I could use it for that?

Can always use them to back up you HD, data, etc.

I'm not into consoles so I don't know about backing up video games.
