Prices of DVD/CD will drop at a later time, that will be an advantage...A Dual-Format burner will ease the prices for all media and I'll be waiting for it

  2. Well, I didn't buy my first DVD burner until a week back (although I've had a -ROM drive that's sat mostly unused since 1998; I got on the bandwagon a bit early), so I'll get to see which one of these wins sometime in 2007

  3. NEC is working toward starting commercial production of an internal, read-only HD-DVD drive for desktop PCs around next summer.
Cool, a read only drive with no content available................. Uh, think their marketing department needs to re-think this? Especially since it looks like the RW will only be 6 months later.

  4. Until I see a headline that reads something like:

"Majority Group of Movie Studios pick (insert format) as new High Def Disc Format for Home Video"

I'm not buying one. 90% of my DVD burns are for Movies, the rest as data. The Format War will be one by the number of stuios who use the format. If all but Sony Studios pick HD-DVD as the format, Who will want to buy one player for DVD/HD-DVD and another for the few other titles in Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray has size and companies behind it. HD-DVD has the lowest cost. From what I have read, they can use the same hardware and retool quicky to press HD-DVD.

I want Blu-Ray because of its size and group of backers, but lets get real. If the Studios can spend a "little" money to make the High Def switch they will. The question is how much more will I have to spend.

the cheaper the media, the better. I have no problem with continuing to use what is soon to be outdated (non dual later dvdr) media. Movie only, keep 1 audio track... for .24 cents a piece? Awesome.

  6. I have a yen to buy one:

"OEM internal DVD drives for PCs are currently supplied to PC makers at 5,000 to 6,000 yen a piece. But next-generation internal DVD drives for PCs are likely to cost between 30,000 yen and 50,000 yen per unit initially"

JVC has joined the Blu-ray camp:

Having both Sony and Fox in the blu-ray camp should ensure the big-media's interests in how the format works will be well-represented.

This will help blu-ray in getting pre-recorded content released in their format, vs HD-DVD.

At the ongoing Ceatec show in Japan one of the most interesting optical drives is probably the 5.25” PC Blu-ray burner Pioneer displays in its booth. The drive can write BD-R (write once Blu-ray Disc) and BD-RE (rewritable Blu-ray Disc) including dual layer media at 2x speed (72 Mbps). It also function as a standard DVD burner with support for 8x DVD±R, 4x DVD±RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL and 2x DVD-R DL.

Pioneer did not include faster DVD speeds because of problems with vibrations affecting the Blu-ray pick-up. Support for writing and reading CD’s is also missing but it will likely be included in the second generation drives. The burner has no model name yet but is actually expected to be released for sale next year.
The price of this Blu-Ray drive is almost $300 (30000 Yen) same as the 2nd generation DVD burners (I might be wrong I'm not living in the US). But today's DL drives is cheap.
