  1. Hi,

I have a newbie questions on playing Divx/Xivd avi or mpg on DVD Player.

Do you just burn the avi to a cdr and it plays on the DVD player? For vcd and svcd, the avi is converted to a DAT and placed ina MPEG folder. What is the disk layout to play Divx movie. What software can be used?

    Thanks,

    Hello,

What is your dvd player model??? If it can play divx (must say so) then you can just burn the avi file. If not it must be converted to vcd, svcd or dvd.

These are few good resources for your general questions:

    https://www.videohelp.com/dvd

    https://www.videohelp.com/vcd

    https://www.videohelp.com/convert

You author the mpg to vcd like you author mpg to dvd. The folders are made for you by the authoring software like vcdeasy. For dvd you need tmpgenc dvd author, ulead dvd movie factory, or others found in the Tools section found on the left.

  3. Thanks Kevin for the response,

So all I need is to burn the avi to the cdr, correct? I did not want to convert to vcd or svcd for loss of resolution. I am asking this question to test my two DVD player, if they don't work, I am thinking of buying the new DIVX DVD player,

    regards,

    Hello,

As I said the dvd player has to say it will play divx (there will be a DIVX logo on it somewhere if it does).

Most likely if it's an older molder it won't do it. Then you'll have to convert to vcd/svcd. VCD will fit more per disc but at lower quality. SVCD will be better but may take 3 or more discs depending on lenght (I think most 2 hour movies take 3 discs for svcd, not sure though).

You won't lose much quality on the conversion from my limited experience with divx. But you'll have to do it unless you get a divx player.

    Kevin

P.S. The conversion can take a LONG time depending on the speed of your computer. You can experiment by converting trailers or just movie clips off of your dvds.

EDIT - I may have missed one of your questions - yes you only need a cdr to burn an avi/vcd/svcd to play it. Vcd/svcd SHOULD work on any dvd player (though some may like cdrw and not read cdr). If you do get a divx dvdplayer all you'll need to do is burn the avi file itself onto the cdr and then play.
