  1. Hi all,

OK with the new Star Wars Episodes 4, 5, & 6 DVD's out I want to go back and capture my original Widescreen VHS to DVD (I want the original non-Special Edition films)

I was going to try and put the three films onto a single DVD+R. But I wanted a little advice. I've done an anamorphic capture before (ie captured the widescreen movie WITHOUT the black bars and told the authoring prog it was 16:9) and I want to do this again. In my previous project I captured at 352x576 and authored as 16:9 and it worked fine (although I know this isn't a 100% compliant format).

This time I want to complicate matters further by squashing 6hrs 30mins onto the DVD.

So to the point. Can I just capture all three films (cropping out the black borders) at 352x576, tell the authoring software they are 16:9 and still get 6hrs 30mins on a single DVD?

    Cheers,

    NiVZ

    Hello,

You could capture at vcd and MAYBE get that high, but probably not. Use a bitrate calculator to determine what rate to use:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=1#1

You could also look into kvcd/kdvd settings. These are special modifications to squeeze more video onto a disc. I don't remember the website but just do a net search. You'd be better off at capturing one per disc to get the best quality.

  3. according to the videohelp bitrate calculator here , 6hrs 30 mins would need an average bitrate of 1334kbit/s to fit on one DVDr.

So to answer your question, can it be done. Yes.

Would you want to watch it, quite possibly not.

  5. Thanks for the replys so far guys. I know the 6hours 30mins can be done, but I just wanted to check the anamorphic angle. I know the quality will be comparable to VCD.

Got to complicate matters slightly more tho as I just remembered the subtitles for Jabba are in the black area on the widescreen version of Return of the Jedi.

I was thinking of capturing the first two movies without the black areas and telling the authoring software these are 16:9, but now I'll need to capture ROTJ WITH the black borders (to get the subs) and tell the software it's not widescreen.

I think I remember seeing that this can be done as long as they are in they're own title sets. Is this correct? (I know DVDShrink can mix 4:3 and 16:9 titles on the same disc)

    Cheers,
