I have a liteon ldw-451s dvd+-rw
I have upgraded the firmware a few times.I was wondering if it is possible to convert it to a dual layer by a firmware upgrade. If so where do i go to get it.
I suspect I may have to fork out for a new one but im not exactly rich

Look up your drive in the writers section to the left or do a search, i'm sure if the firmaware is available for it someone has posted about it.
Some drives can be upgraded to a DL drive supposedly. Like my NEC2500A has a hack to convert it to a DL 2510 model. Rather one exists for your drive I don't know. But it can be done with some drives, although not alot of testing seems to be being done yet. DL disks are still far to expensive. -
Here's everything you need. I flashed my SOHW-812s to SOHW-832s with patched firmware.

Not possible with the LDW-451. This is a 4X writer and 8X write power is required to be able to record a DVD+R DL disk(Dual Layer).

Codeguys have modified 832 firmwares for the 451: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

Roll the Dice but I wouldn't do it. There are no guarantees that Liteon Ever tuned the drive in the factory to write Dual layer. I guess the most likely problem it would cause is to create a $15.00 coaster. Of course the Extra power you are now operating the Laser at may also cause it to die earlier than expected. My Suggestion, spend the ~$89.00 on a NEC Dual layer drive and be sure that it will work.

Technical Stuff
The truth is, the 51S series is virtually identical to the 2S series. They have the same motor, same laser unit, same controller chipset, etc. The only difference between the 51S and the 2S that we are aware of is that the 2S has a newer revision of the analog signal processor. If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

Shocker,
Obviously you cannot read. There may be no dispute about the internal components being the same. If the drive was not tested and tuned to write DVD+R DL media then you will have a potential issue. This process is called "waterfalling". The MFG checks the drive. If it cannot achieve the write quality for writing DVD+R DL they make it a 4X or a SL 8X Or maybe they did not test it at all. Like I said you can do what you want. Just trying to educate you on the risks.
