  1. I don't play games... never really had the desire. But, my 5 year old son loves 'em.

This xmas Santa will be bringing him (he will be 5 1/2) a system and a few games.

A lot of systems are out now. For a 5 year old what would be recommended taking into consideration their smaller hands, etc. XBox, GameCube, PlayStation, Nintendo ??

    Thanks

  2. The Playstation controller I find is the easiest to use - they are compact and natural - but all my friends tend to get along fine with the other controllers.

    Aside from that, I can't really say. I don't use consoles much - that's why I have a GeForce FX5900.

    Hello,

Size wize I think the gamecube has the smallest controller. Nintendo also has the most kid friendly games, pound for pound.

I dont do much with games I had a few consoles , modded them with in a few weeks and then sold them to my relatives (cheap) ...but a good suggestion is get one of those small Nintendo advantage, that way the parent can have a rest while in the car or other activities, , , besides Nintendo has alot of cartoony type of games...

    Hello,

Dvd_ripper - The nintendo advantage is a portable video game system - not sure how out of the loop you are. Actually the advantage sp goes for about $80US I think, but the gamecube is really cheap to (for consoles that is).

EDIT - KEVIN (boy I hate typos! )

Yea... saw those on sale for $75.00 now at the big boxes... are these new ones back lit... I remember seeing my nephews playing, but had to stay with 12" of a 60 watt or greater bulb.

I saw a game system advertised by v-tech aimed at younger kids, might be worth a look. www.vtech.com

Edit: now that I look at it your probably better off with a regular system.... Looks like it better suited for ages below 5 to me.

  13. "DVD_Ripper" One thing you might want to get him a used N64 at EB or GameStop. There $15.00 dollars and cartridges are better for small kids. GameCub uses a small kind of DVD. Little kids some times do not take care of there stuff think of the N64 as a Fisher Price toy. Plus the used games are very cheep and I do not think a five year kid will care about the graphics.

If you do want to buy a new system for your son I would get the GameCub. I do think the controller is little better for kids. Also most game now after two month have a big price drop. There are to many games on the market now. Also EB and GameStop have membership cards EB you pay five dollars you save 10- percent on all used games. Gamestop you pay ten dollar and get a video game magazine for ten month and ten percent on all there used games.

I believe EB Games has the same deal. I got the membership card when I traded in my ps1 for my new (ie used) xbox.

Yes, I think the catridges are a good idea... I do believe any CD/DVD media would soon be trashed.

I had no idea you can get Nintendo 64 machines for $15.00. Great, initial machine for him to learn on. What do some of hte games for hte N64 run, price wise?

I'll have to find a local GameStop store. Do most all carry the older machines?

Since he's five...I recommend gamecube. There arent many kid friendly games out there for ps2 and especially none for xbox. Gamecube reamins loyal to it's target audience: Kids. You got mario games, pikmin, pokemon, yugioh etc. You wont find that on ps2 or xbox. In fact, the only kiddy game I can remember for kids on ps2 are the disney series they introduced a while ago. Hope that helps.

I know that my gamestop has only one used machine....if you cant find one, you can buy mine. I cant imagine the older games costing more than 4-5 bucks.

On a side note any of the PS2 games for the younger audience I have seen were the lamest games I have ever seen. I don't remember seeing any of the Disney ones but any of the games based on movies seem to rise to the top of crap pile. IMO

Very true for us...but the kids may not think so. I had never heard of any disney games either until I started working at BBV. There's tarzan, nemo etc. I'm guessing they were really low budget games because the graphics are thrown together from a crap pile.

    Also, I remembered anoter kids game...shrek 2.

I would go with the Xbox. I've played all the consoles and the best controllers are teh smaller Xbox controllers. The PS2 ones are not very confortable and hurt your hands.

You can use xbconnect.com and let them play with other users all over the world for free and bypass Xbox live altogether.

    give this a shot
http://www.xboxlink.co.uk/ for non xbox live gaming

Just like xbconnect it makes your xbox think you are playing on a local lan instead of people across the world but you can play anybody anywhere of course it uses your pc to host the game and then you take it from there pretty much

You can play on a ps2, xbox, or gamecube *(please not that you can play on all these systems but not xbox against gamecube or ps2)
using this free service (I have signed up and need to test it out myself)

Back to the original topic I would also vote for the gamecube for kids
