  1. Hello to all you experts!

I have managed to rip a few DVD's (as backups of course) then using Nero6 dragged the VOB files into Video and hey presto! A new DVD including all the menu's! Of course not all DVD's are small enough to do this, most are too big and require shrinking. You all know this of course!

My question is...if I was using a dual layer burner and disc...would I be able to do the same thing with a big size DVD as I have done with a small size DVD?

Theoretically, yes, however nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Check out this long (and still growing) thread on the issue of layer break placement - https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=225001

There are also issues with some players not recognising dual layer at all, or properly, and other generation one teething problems.

guns1inger, thats because dual layer is still in its infancy. the technology is still rather new, in its first generation, not to mention, also the media is still very expensive.

Which is why im holding off DL until the technology gets better (looking for 2nd or 3rd generation drives) and media prices to fall.

so far, im happy with my single layer burner.

  4. Not an easy question.

First really if the disk is not protected, then all you really have to do is copy it same as a file from hard drive to hard drive basically
Now rather it works in every player can be a question also. My norcent DP300 will play anything including a plain mpeg2 file not even authored to a DVD. I think it does have a 2gig limit on the file and just stops there if a 4gig file was playing. So in theory (not tested) I would say if I started playing the menu VOB it would LOOK like a DVD and play although not a true DVD with all the files present.

As for the Dual layer disks, as others have said more to that than a plain SL disk. And even when doing those correctly it may not work because of all the other problems invloved with the disks, drives, programs, ect being new and trying to work together.
Till disks get far less expensive most of us aren't trying that much DL experementing yet.

  5. Thanks Guys...I think I will leave it a while before I bother to buy one, not exactly flush at the moment!

Does anyone know where I can get a list of films that are small enough to fit onto a normal dvd?

Use DVD Shrink and/or DVD Rebuilder and it doesn't matter how big they are.
