Hi, guys.)
My wife was ind enough to indulge the geek in me, and bought me the box set of the first Star Wars trilogy. That being said I wanted to back them up, but am unable to with DVD Backup, or the two latest versions of MTR. What to do? These are what came up: Read Failure for blocks at 1739216, Mirror of Title set 2 failed, and Mirror of DVD failed.
Thanks for your help, as always.

timeto take them back,it sounds like.
The last time I had that happen to me, I ended
up taking the DVDs back to Hollywood, and exchanging
it for another copy, same title. That worked great.
Just goes to show: Watch their 2 for $20 PVT deals, some discs are crap.
The other thing that might be causing you grief:
Are you ripping full DVD or trying to do movie only extraction?
Seems like with 20th FOX releases, full disc is the only way to go,
as reported here by some last week, movie only extraction causes headaches. -
We've had another report of the new Star Wars release failing to rip with MTR. If this can be confirmed, and it turns out to be a new copy protection, we'll need someone to send us a copy so we can try to get this problem fixed. Anyone else able to backup the new Star Wars trilogy DVD set?

MTR 202 ripped all my SWT disks wthout failure.
Different protection for different regions...?
I dont think so , would cost to much.
Take the disks back and demand replacements.
All my disks are now DivX'd for the kids. ( all movies on one DVD )
Oh , and i only ripped the movie based on chapters ( title only mode ) with the current reqired anlgle set == NO Problems.
Gona do a full rip now of all disks.
GeezerButtz -
OK . I have ripped all 4 SWT disks in full disk mode ( with disk content selected for a %100 copy )
All disks passed %100.
The disks i have were bought from the UK.

There's a report on how to get around it (using PC software) on this forum:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=238295 -
Yeah , great if the dude has a good PC ...
BUT....
As it seems to be a poor disk issue, he should demand replacements for the crap they sold him.
Companies have to learn that they can't sell us shit all the time and get away with it.
GeezerButtz -
Did you read that thread?
-
Yes , funny enough i did read the thread , and all I can find is references to PC apps , and method/suggestions releated to PC apps.
The list for the un-enlightened....
DVD Shrink = PC
DVD Decrypter = PC
Clone DVD = PC
CCE SP = PC
DVD Rebuilder = PC
Smart Ripper = PC
I have to ask myself if You read this thread correctly....
i.e MTR, and DVDBackup failure.......
And just incase , yes the first entry in the thread that you point to contains this......
My "A New Hope", and the extra's disc both had read erros brand new.
Tested DVD Shrink, Nero Disc Scan, DVDInfo Surface Scan, DVD Decrypter, on a Samsung DVD-Rom, a Pioneer 107D, and NEC2500A...Definately bad blocks, not just my reader.
He even states that its because of badblocks on the disk.
So , for the last time....
the best method to get a proper rip is to..
RETURN THE DISKS , AND GET SOME THAT ARE NOT FAULTY!!!!.
Its a consumer right.
GeezerButtz -
Calm down buddy
It just seems strange that there are so many reports of rip failures due to bad blocks. Perhaps it a region 1 thing? -
No worries, guys.
I did as you suggested, and returned the disc. We'll see how this one responds. The others all seemed to do fine. It was only the first disc. Even popped the original in to 4 DVD players, and they all "gagged" at certain points. Ah, well. Live, and learn, I suppose. Thanks, again for all the help.

Sweet, guess we can rest at ease a bit longer... Looks like they just had a bad production run.

I definitely think it's a poor production run, here, folks. I've taken back A New Hope for a second time, and am currently in the process of checking out the third. Yeesh!!! What a friggin' hassle!
Drake -
Figures, Fox gets these things to market to anticipate
a $115 mil on sales...i wondeed if they'll report
how many were actually returned due to crap
manufacturing..."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

When I'm not here, Where can I be found?

<<sigh>> The third time was *not* the charm. I'm going to have to return this one too. :P I'll write a letter as well to Fox for zero quality control. Every disc of A New Hope crapped out between 55 to 57 minutes into the movie thus far.
Drake -
just out of curiosity whats your return excuse
buyer: "hi I would like to return this disk please"
seller: "sure, what is the reason for the return?
buyer: "i cant copy them"
seller: "hmmmm.... "
hahahaha -
How about "it craps out 55-57 minutes into the movie, and no, it's not because of the layer break".

It really has nothing to do with the copying. It's about the ability to watch the damned film without having to skip chapters, y'know? I just tell them the truth. The quality sucks on the production, and I want *another* disc to replace the garbage that was sold to me in the first place. :P

Naaaaaah. At my age I'd have an unfair advantage over the kids with my impregnable fort. Plus it'd be waaay too shiny, and it'd cause damage to too many airplanes flying overhead. :P

More food for thought - Lucas's anti-piracy efforts against modded Xboxes:

Sheesh, that's good to know. Maybe I'll just give up on the idea of using my modded xbox as a DVD player altogether...

The THX OPtimizer is the culprit.
When i used Zenith DVD318, the menu was not navigational.
Then i used Philips DVDr985, the disc defunct when i got to the first screen of the THX OPtimizer.
Indeed using MTR 2.0.2, i was able to rip Star Wars 4, 5 , movie only.
Disc 6 works just fine, for disc copy, and in the free standing dvd player, menu navigation and Optimer works fine.
Such phenonmenon has happened before in the Indiana Jones series. -
I think it's more of a bad production run problem, since some have been able to rip SW 4, 5 & 6 in full disc mode. You might have just gotten a mastering error somewhere other than the main feature track...
