MPEG-1 is a specific codec. "muxed" is short for multiplexed coming from the latin multi meaning many and plex meaning fold. So it has "many folds" or the mpeg is the folding together of multiple things like an audio and video stream into one fiile. (your mpeg) Mpeg 2 and mpeg 4 are other popular types of mpeg codecs that are also muxed together. In comparison mov and avi are not codecs but rather "formats" which can contain many different types of audio and video codecs.Originally Posted by badtz

If thats still over your head, basically "muxed" means the files contains an audio track and a video track, and "de-muxed" means that one of the tracks has been removed.
.m1v = demuxed mpeg1 video
.m2v = demuxed mpeg2 video
.mpeg = muxed video, can be either mpeg1 or mpeg2
and so on and so forth
