When I rip a dvd does it matter if I remove the macrovision or not? I want to make backups of my dvds. Some guides don't say anything about macrovision and some do.

I know. But I use SmartRipper and newly installed, it doesn't. Does it matter if I do.

What about Macrovision, why's there a need to to remove it? sorry for the noobish question.. hoping to learn

Macrovision was meant to make analog VHS copies unwatchable as it messes with the VCR's picture circuitry. But it is possible that it can degrade regular playback even directly to a television. I have seen this with certain combinations of TV's and VCRs. Unless you want your back-ups protected from making analog copies, just disable it. Then, there will be no chance at all of it mucking up things.

Also, SmartRipper has not been updated for quite a long time, I believe its no longer being worked on, from what I read somewhere
Apart from that I use DVD Decrypter, its updated with new/improved features all the time
You can still use SmartRipper, but DVD Decrypter is freeware as well
