DVD+RW is better than DVD-RW in at least the following way:
After recorded in DVD (+/-) Recorder, DVD+RW can be played immediately in any DVD players. In case of DVD-RW you have to click the 'Finalise' button (it takes 60+ minutes) before it can be played. -

so there is nothing that a dvd+rw can do that a dvd-rw can't do?

There are different procedures to making the two formats compatible outside of what they were burned/recorded on....but that is taken care of by either computer software or the DVD recorder.
Some recorders make discs that are more compatible than others BUT that is the fault/feature of the DVD recorder....NOT the format.
