  3. Are you talking about using a clear paint to coat DVD disc faces or using a colored paint for the front of a drive?

  4. I think he's talking about coating inkjet-printed DVD-Rs

I use 1301 for my ink jet printed DVD's. It does give it a nice glossy look, although you have to be careful not to use too much. I haven't tried 1303 (I think it's clear Satin). Feel free to explore and decide what's best for you. it's only $2 a can at K-mart (or close to that), so your allowance should cover a few cans.

I know this is a different variety but I like the Krylon "Low Odor" sprays. They come in gloss or matte. I use the matte and it is awesome, low odor and two coats dry in 5 minutes. A can runs about $5 dollars but lasts forever.

  8. Can this method of clear coating be used on DVDs with inkjet printed labels applied to them or is it only for inkjet printable discs?

    Rowman,

I suppose it could be, but I don't know if I would want the added weight on the disc ( laquer/enamel + Label). I don't think the spray adds much, but I haven't tried it myself.

  10. I guess I could give it a shot. I think the clear coat would help to seal the label onto the disc to prevent peeling. Just need to be sure not to use too much. Thanks for the second opinion.

Rowman, I tried this...It can work okay...but overall, kinda sucks. Paper + Spraypaint + repeated heating from a laser = bleh. It'll start to bubble over a short period of time, imbalancing the disc, and causing serious playback issues.

I have used the 1301 now on 2 dvds, looks great, nice gloss. Don't put to much on at 1 time though. Spray about 14 inches away, in a side to side motion, then let dry 15-20mins (its says 12 mins, but I do 15-20 just to be sure its dry). I usually but 2-3 coats on the dvd and I'm very pleased with the look.

not questioning your judgement, but why do you think it's better?

Is it shinier, thicker, more even? elaborate.

I can see that it's more expensive.

My only complaint about Krylon (or any spray paint) is dust. I go to great lengths to create a dust free environment, but some how a couple of specs usually manage to get through. it's not too noticeable, but when you reflect light off the disc, you can see small specs. anyone else notice this? or am I just being too picky?
