TV episodes and interlace/motion question

Hi all,

I've been archiving PAL DVD to 528x400 avis using the mpeg4 mencoder option: no filters (deinterlace etc is off), high quality, 2-pass, trellis quant, bilinear, sse.

I get a problem when watching on my 4:3 tv (not prog scan) with horizontal lines or 'tearing' appearing in motion scenes; like interlacing a little out of sync. I'm using the Xbox media centre.

I would love any tips.

did you try deinterlacing? that worked on most of my 4:3 dvds, also you shouldn't scale down too much...in case you have a dvd-burner you can burn your avis on a dvd-r (burn as iso 9660!) avoiding smaller sizes and splitting etc, though i have no idea if the xbox can read this.
