For whatever reason...windows recognizes, but can't start my Sony dc4-hc40 Digital camcorder connected via 1394 Firewire port. Any help? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to no avail.

Has it worked before?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
I just had to do a clean install,, but prior to that, it worked fine.

Did you update windows? And if so did you do the SP2 update, I've seen a lot of posts with issues regarding SP2. It's a longshot but since you just did a clean install.....
Any ?'s in device manager? -
No ?'s, just the yellow exclamation point on the Sony Device in the device manager..this is quite frustrating. could it possibly be a problem with the camera..or is it most likely simply a driver / conflict issue?
JPT -
Not sure but that ! is probably on top of the ? What does it say when you right click it and select properties. Does it say it's a cam or just unknown device? Anything else listed ot just the cam, there should be none.
I'd suggest you try the cam on another computer, you can at least eliminate or confirm it as the culprit. Could be the cable also. As far as the driver is concerned it should just be plug and play, that has been my experience. -
The error listed is "code 10" unable to start device. I"ll try another computer tongiht, as well as another cable...thanks for the advice.

You may just need an updated driver.
The more windows is updated, the more an older driver might not work.
That happened with me with a hp flatbed scanner.
I also had it happen with a tvtuner card.
To this date, I can't use either of them. -
Either the manufacturers website or you could try www.driverguide.com
-
It should be plug and play with XP. I looked around for that code and couldn't find anything specific. Have you updated XP since your clean install?
Another suggestion I came across is this but for a different device, uninstall the cam, disconnect the cam. Restart and plug the cam in. -
Clean install...upodated through sp2....i tried to uninstall the device etc...didnt' work either....very frustrating!

That is good.
You would just need a sp2 compliant driver if you reinstalled sp2. -
