  1. I'm in the process of purchaseing my first DVR. I just returned a JVC super vhs recorder simply for the reason the video recorded in SP mode didn't look very good and for $200 I might as well spend a little bit more and purchase a dvr. Another problem with the JVC super vhs recorder was the built in tv tuner. The picture just wasn't very clear thus the recorded tv programs didn't look good.

while recording tv programs with the DVR I would believe the tuner should be of high quality since the recording reflects the quality of the tuner output.

The people in this group have far more expierence and in this field than the salesmen I've spoke with the past week. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If you're not happy with a JVC S-VHS unit or the JVC DVD recorder, then I suggest you quit. You won't find what you're looking for unless you spend $10,000 or more.

Your next best option is to get a unit that direct dumps a satellite stream, which in all honesty, is not much better or different than the DVD recorder.

  3. I returned the super vhs recorder only. I'm still looking to purchase a DVR. One that perhaps has a good tuner in it and will record to DVD-RW.

  4. If you get one of the main brands of DVD recorders the general quality of the recorded video at the best setting is supposedly indistinguishable from broadcast quality, which would be as good as you can get. If you like to tinker with PCs the best possible quality now can be had from an HDTV tuner card. Feed either live or recorded HDTV from your PC to your TV and you'll be very pleased with the results.

With the Panny DMR-E100HS that I have, video quality looks like:

XP and SP = the same as the original cable broadcast
LP = VHS quality without the noise
EP = VHS EP quality without the noise.

Tuner works as well as any TV or VCR that I've ever used but I'm not sure what you're looking for in a tuner.
