Hi, I am trying to convert an AVI movie I have to dvd so i can play it on my dvd player. When ever I convert with TMPGenc plus i get a "Stream Writing Error" message. The resulting video is fine but there is no sound. Now do I have to extract the sound as I have read in other posts and run the risk of the sound being out of sync (also as I have read in other posts)? I am a real noob at this and just want to do a simple job withoout too much technicalities.
    All help would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hi SilkverDales,

Use either of AVICodec or GSpot to identify what the audio is that's in the AVI. Post the full results as it'll help to decide on what to do next.

It seems that TMPGEnc has an issue with the audio format (can't remember which ones make it spit its dummy out - I think AC3 is one) and you may need to extract it and transcode (change) to an acceptable format - possibly different tools for different formats.

    Hi SilkverDales,

It's clear from both tools that you've got an Xvid AVI (video) with MP3 audio in it.

TMPGEnc doesn't take MP3 audio as an input, hence your error message. See:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=797146

Download VirtualDub and extract the audio from the AVI as a WAV file (it's fairly intuitive, have a hunt around). Luckily, the MP3 is already at 48,000Hz (DVD spec), so you won't need to sort that out.

Once you've got your WAV, re-do the AVI in TMPGEnc, but use the extracted WAV as your audio source and all should (fingers crossed) be OK.

    Good luck...

    Hi SilkverDales,

Somebody is in the same boat as you. Thought I'd refer you to a specific post in that topic as it points you to a guide for using VirtualDub, in case it's of any use...

    Hi daamon
Well that worked! thanks for the advice, I used the Vdub guide by Baldrick as you suggested and everything is hunkydory.
Now I'm going to try a couple of others I was having trouble with. BTW the first one I looked at that gave me trouble also was MP3 audio. So we seem to have hit the problem. Once again thanks.

I found that the main problem was the format of my drive. It was FAT 32 which only allows files up to 4GB and when you encode it makes the films 4.5GB so at 97% of encoding TMPgenc says "uh no disc space left!!"
So what I did was to partition off 6GB of my drive and then format that to NTFSC (or what ebver it is) so now when I encode direct the file to that and voila no stream writing errors since.
    Hope that helps

I got Partition Magic and used that to partition off a section and then format. Apart from that I'm unable to help you I'm afraid. Sorry
