I didn't want to bumpmy older post so I've started a new one. The BSOD are now a regular occurance - 0x024 all the time. Yesterday I rebooted after one and got a new BSOD 0x0c IIRC, I have no idea what this means or why I should have it. Encoding is a hit and miss afair - 2hrs through a 3hr encode yesterday produced another 0x024 stop error.
I've run an 8hr memory test today which reports no errors at all. I've run chkdsk on both my HD which said the HD were fine. Games fail to run for more than five minutes, IE is constantly crashing and to top it all off I've now got some kind of spyware or virus which has hijacked my IE explorer and keeps sending me to http://296f8.ilxt.info/index.php?aid=632 - god knows what this is or how I have it. Spybot finds nothing, adaware causes BSOD as does any virus scanner.
As if this isn't bad enough I'm moving in about a week and can't be arsed to rip my PC apart to find out whats wrong.
I'm still hoping this is nothing worse than a dodgy cable somewhere but I'm not holding my breath.
I may just have to bite the bullet and put this thing into a shop for repair - something I've never had to do before![]()
If anyone has any suggestions post up a reply.

to remove that spyware go into the registry (run, regedit) and delete it.
I would also try a reformat of windows -
...or try HiJack This, it will let you get rid of any unwanted start-up apps, browser hijackers etc. Very good software, and free.

Over the weekend I am going to refit everything and then look at getting rid of this browser hijack. I'm using Spybot and Adaware at the moment and Adaware finds something everytime I run it.
For the first time in months I have managed to complete a game of C&C Generals and am hoping straight onto Call Of Duty when I get home.
Fingers crossed it was just a problem with an IDE cable - I can finally finish a virus scan and run Adaware without getting 0x0000024 stop errors.

That's cool that you found the problem
Usually the cables don't go bad like that, learn something new everyday -
AdAware always finds something, just check out what exactly it found. I.e. if you have cookies enabled, it will always count cookies from some websites among the things it'll find.
You should read a bit about it before you do anything. Same rule applies to HiJack This and any other software you may use actually... -
Looks like I was far too hasty. After having the PC run fine for 3 days its back to square one. Constant BSOD 0x024 during Trend Online Virus Scan. Always in the same directory c:\Windows\Installer. The kicker ? I dont even have a Windows\Installer dir on the pc.
Edit - I do have a Installer dir but it was hidden.

Have you done a full OS reinstall with a full (LONG) format? I know you said you ruled out the RAM, have you run full diags (SiSoft Sandra maybe) on the CPU and mobo?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
VCDHunter,
How about the Power Supply? Are you sure that it is handling the drain?
Remember that when you had all disconnected, it worked ok.
But, it seems also that you have something of spyware/virus in the system.
I think you HAVE c:\windows\installer. It should be hidden. It's a system dir.
Can you take your disk to a friend's house and do a FULL virus scan?"Adopt, adapt and improve!" -
Last time I had a problem like this, it was the power supply...
Believe it or not...
I leave the PC on its side with the case of whilst I check to see if its running etc, turn it on and shit ! I'm chocking on smoke ! The power cable to the floppy drive has melted ! Seems I didn't have the power lead plugged in correctly to the floppy.
Buddha would put the thing into a shop for repair. But that's Buddha's way..."Adopt, adapt and improve!" -
This may have to be shopped now. I'm out of ideas on the fixing front.

I confess...
I also had to shop that one!
Damn!! The first (and only, yet) time ever but... there's always a first time.
Good luck! I would like to know about the results."Adopt, adapt and improve!" -
I'm not shopping it yet, I am gonna try and borrow a spare PSU from someone. I did a complete format (removed all partitions) and install of XP yesterday - crashed again during install 0x024, but it hasn't crashed since. It now flys through virus scans and adaware without problems. Its a strange one alright . . . . .
