you should be able to. try a different url register.
I designed a web site for this nightclub. They still owed me $800. The new owners were sweating me just to give them the name without paying. I was like yeah , right. Dicked around for several weeks and just happened to notice it expired the next day! Reregistered it for $15.It was worht it got my $800 the next day. -
Some registrars allow you to 'backorder' a domain name. The fee varies.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
I think there is a grace period of a few weeks before they go public
"Terminated!" :firing: -
I was just doing this the other day. Look up on Google for "register domain" and you'll get some very good deals for registering or backordering domain names.
They do hold the names over as much as 90 days for current owners, just in case there was some reason they did not re-up their registration in time.
Be careful of the fees that they charge for backordering names. I have seen some that will only charge you for the backorder once they can secure the name for you, but then they sock you with a $60+ fee for the backorder service. (you have to use a credit card for most backorder services.)
I didn't bookmark any of the sites that I researched on the other day... sorry.. but there are some good deals out there.
If you can't get the .com or .net or .org - check out the .us and other domain extensions they offer now.... My wife has a .biz addy for her soon to be business that she is starting... -
www.godaddy.com offers a back order service. Think its $19.95 if I remember correctly.

Having already been burned in the .biz fiasco I wouldn't put any money up front. It was only 5 bucks but it's the principal of it. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/01/03/lawyers_make_killing_in_biz/
Go to networksolutions.com and search to see if it's available. When it comes up unavailable click the back order button. It will tell you if someone already did. If someone already did then forget it, if it isn't just sit back and wait, if the registration just ran out it may still be registered to that person and just hasn't been updated in the whois yet. Also as stated above they usually give a grace period.
