  1. Oki doki, I know there's another thread going about copy protection, but what I encountered was quite different.

Recently, I attempted to back up 2 DVD5 titles to DVDR. It should have been an easy task right? I've done this many times and always just used dvddecrypter to rip in ISO mode and burn the ISO created. The simplest form of back up. Coming accross those two particular titles -Last Exile Vol. 3 & 4- I did the exact same thing.

I didn't come accross any problem with dvddecrypter, only to realize later that I couldn'tn play the backups from my stand alone player nor from my PC. I thought I just had 2 coasters, I repeated the process with a different media and got the same result. I then loaded the ISO image created by dvddecrypter onto a virtual drive, and it failed to load on powerdvd. That same image loaded on InstantCopy8 gives me an invalid IFO/BUP file error.

With a newer version of dvddecrypter, I tried again to rip the movie, and get a On-the-Fly IFO/BUP file patching failed error. Invalid IFO/BUP file. Same as IC8.

    Anyone encountering the same problems?

  2. perhaps the actual dvd disc you are trying to rip is corrupted? I recently enountered a similar issue (though i back up to folders not an iso), where for the last title on the disc, they actually had a complete blank ifo/bup file for it, despite the content being there. Needless to say i had to remove that extra ifo file/title from the disc and use ifoedit to make it so the dvd had 2 titles and not 3 (by editing the ifo file) and it worked.

try to see which files it is having a problem with and use ifoedit to open them up

The general rule of thumb is... that we presume that it is NOT new copy protection, but rather bad mastering.

Time will tell, but that's the general rule.

  4. Did this happen with volumes 1&2?

I highly doubt they would implement some new form of copy protection on only half of a box set.

  5. yeah thats why i posted my previous response. the disc i had the trouble with was a defect. I doubt all of them were like that or i would have heard of some recall for it

you problaby just have a defective disc. If possible try the disc from some other source and see if the problem still occurs

  6. vol1 &2 of last exile were dvd9, and I believe I ripped them as files to process them in IC8.

I found two new titles that I couldn't rip in ISO mode with dvddecrypter:

    Amelie and 12 kingdoms vol.6

I would get the same error message when ripping them in ISO mode. However they ripped just fine in file mode, and I was able to process them in dvdshrink or IC8.

The thing is that with the older version of dvddecrypter I had, it didn't display any of those messages when I backed up dvd5 to dvdr in ISO mode, and I ended up with a load of backups that just don't work. It has nothing to do with bad mastering or defective disc I believe.

I am just surprise that you just can't rip in ISO mode with those new type of dvds.
