I ran a little test of transfering files between my internal HDD and my external HDDs. Does this look OK to you guys?
Testing with 1 folder containing 11 files @ 1,243mb total
USB2 HDD = 56seconds = 22mb/sec
Firewire HDD = 46seconds = 27mb/sec
I thought the speeds were suppose to be
USB2 = 60mb/sec
Firewire = 50mb/sec

Those are the theoretical maximums for throughput for each of those. You also have to take into account bus overhead, speed of the drive itself, other devices on each bus (including your internal IDE bus), fragmentation on both ends and several other factors. No one ever gets the max, all you can do is optimize to get the best out of your own system. Something like SiSoft Sandra or another diagnostic program may be able to give you some tips on optimizations.

Ya mean no one else has ever run these tests before? New toy and you never thought to see if it works as advertised?

I've never actually done a speed test on my Maxtor 5000DV but I'm sure it's well short of the theoretical maximum. I'll run some tests soon and see what I get, for posterity's sake.
