    Hello, I just recorded to a DVD+RW a program from my Tivo. When played back on the Lite On DVD, all is good. When I bring it back up to my computer, I have no sound. I thought it might have to do with finalizing, but the manual says +RW does not need this step. Any ideas?

    Also, If I want to bring the file into Vegas for editing, where is the actual video file? The disc has two folders on is labeled Video_RM and Video_TS. Inside these folders there are no recognizable .mpg files. I'm sure this is simple, but I'm new to homemade DVDs so please bear with me!
    Aloha,

    Thanks for the reply. I'm not at home now, but I'll look for the audio file tonight. BTW, When I put the DVD in the computer drive, it autoplays in Windows media player, but no sound. Obviously it finds the appropriate video portion but shouldn't it also find the audio?

    What about bringing the whole program into an editing program to remove the commercials?
    Aloha,

    Hi s2krazy;

    If you want to do anything, but play, your recorded DVD movies/programs on your computer you are in for a learning experience!

    About 2 months ago I got a LiteOn 5001 DVD recorder to replace my VCR. I thought it would be an easy thing to just copy the files from the recorded DVD to my computer and edit them, boy was I wrong! I don't mean to scare you, or turn you off in any way from doing your own DVD editing, but you should know from the start it is very time-consuming.

    To answer your question:" where is the actual video file?" Both video and audio are contained in the .VOB files on the DVD; they are mixed together and need to be "demuxed" into seperate "elementary streams" to be edited. This is where programs like TMPGEnc or DVD Decrypter come in. I suggest you read the "EDIT" and "AUTHOR" guides in the left column.

    There are many ways and programs to edit and author DVD's, but here is what I do: Assuming I want to edit an episodic DVD, such as "Monk", on which I can record 4 episodes in EP mode.
    1. Put DVD in DVD drive and launch DVD Decrypter.
    2. Select IFO mode and choose which PGC (ProGram Chain) I want to edit. If my DVD has 4 episodes recorded on it, it will have 10 PGC's - PGC's 1 thru 4 are the shows. PGC 5 is the "Empty" menu item (this mught not exist if using 1163 5001 firmware). PGS's 6-10 are duplicate files, ignore them.
    3. After DVD Decrypter creates a new DVD folder on the hard drive containing just the info from the selected PGC (it will look alot like the"real" DVD file structure, just not as big) I then do --
    4. Open MPEG-VCR editing program (not free) and open the first .VOB file in the directory DVD Decrypter created and do any editing, such as removing commercials, then save the edited file, or files, out to disk. MPEG-VCR automatically demuxes and remuxes the video and audio for you and all saved files are MPEG2 .MPEG files.

    From here you can watch the .MPEG files on the computer, but if you want to record them onto a DVD you will need a DVD Authoring program. I use a program called DVD-Lab (not free) which does a very good job, but has a fairly steep learning curve.

    I probably just confused the heck out of you, but my point is: DVD editing and authoring takes a LOT of time and effort, but it is REALLY cool to watch a DVD you made yourself!

    If you have any more questions on DVD editing or authoring there are forums that deal just with those subjects.

    Harpmaker,

    Thanks for such a detailed reply! That really helps explain a few things. Work is keeping me pretty busy for now, but I'll be sure to try some of your suggestions this weekend (I hope). I am using Vagas+DVD for editing and authoring, but this is all new for me! I'll keep you posted and thanks again!

  6. Hi... I have a 5005. ..and I archive my recording as follows:
    I use TMPGEnc Xpress to extract the video from the DVD+RW using the source wizard (-r is a real pain with this unit..... do yourself a favour and stick with +RW).
    This leaves a DVD compliant MPG on my hard drive. I then edit it with Womble and then author it with TMPGEnc DVD Author. It takes me about 15 minutes without the burn time. It's the most simple solution for me.

    Hi happygareth;

    Is TMPGEnc Xpress faster at extracting than DVD Decrypter? Can it extract PGC's? I'm always on the hunt for a faster way to do things.

    When I said DVD editing takes a lot of time I should have mentioned that I am using a SLOW computer (550MHz) and make my own background images to match DVD content.
