  1. So most won't play cdr's and some will play cdr/w's. Whats the difference between a burned VCD and say an orginal VCD.Why is it that the dvd player can't read them(the burned ones) when it can read a normal vcd just fine.

Well actually most dvd players can read cdr, and even more can read cdrw but its true, it can be extremely difficult or even impossible to make some dvd players read a burned vcd.

Original vcds are not burned they are pressed on silver media. Its the same media that audio cds are pressed on. All dvd players can read this pressed media whereas not all can read cdr or cdrw media. The pressing machines cost a ton, I have no idea how much but at the very least its several hundred thousand dollars. So needless to say, most people will just have to find a dvd player that supports burnt media if they want to play vcds.

  3. As what adam said.

If you plan on buying a DVD player and play back of home made discs is important to you, make sure that the player supports both S/VCD play back AND CD-R/W reading.

Reading of CD-R/W media is a hardware thing and needs to be specifically engineered into the player. All players that support this will advertise this feature.
