  1. I want to copy some DVD-R recordings from a standalone recorder with Dolby Digital audio to DVD-R. The software that came with the burner, Power Producer Gold, records in LPCM. Is that better or worse than the original Dolby Digital soundtrack? Is it surround sound compatible? I also got Nero Express with the burner. Will that copy the Dolby Digital soundtrack from the original? If not is there something that will?

Worse. LPCM is an older audio format that is uncompressed. Use Dolby Digital. LPCM is just a carryover for compatibility.

The newer apps handle Dolby Digital, also known as "AC-3" Use a newer app if your old one doesn't support DD.

  3. It will be identical because it's an uncompressed representation of a compressed source. That's not good though, since it will be taking up bandwidth needlessly.

Typical Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo for DVD is 192 kb/second as opposed to PCM audio which is 1536 kb/second. It takes 8 times as much space, and will cap your maximum video bitrate to 8.5.

If you're an audio purist and PCM was the original source and the program was short, you might want to keep it in THAT case. Otherwise go the AC3 route and use AC3 capable authoring tools like Cap suggested.
