  1. Trying to edit commercials out of old VHS tapes and make MPGs, but no luck after a week of trying. Womble hasn't replied to my e-mails, so I'm trying here. All edited files look fine within the program, but cannot be opened by any other program. ATI File Player gives "Could not open file" error; WMP gives "Class not registered" error. Un-edited files are ok in both players.
Video files are normally captured using an ATI AIW Radeon card, but I also tried capture using a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR card on another machine, with identical results. I'm out of ideas; can someone help?
Both machines are Win98SE, XP-2400/1Gb ram & XP1700/768 Mb ram.
Suggestions for alternative editors also welcomed.

What software are you using to capture? If you use PowerVCR, I've found that Womble doesn't like them very much.

Use ATI MMC. It works the best for ATI cards.

Also, I've found that Womble MPG-VCR works much better than Video Wizard, since VW leaves out that all-important "cut between" button.

I am using WinTV PVR 250 for capture and Video Wizard to cut out commercials and it works fine.
Be sure to save as automatic mpg format, look at details, it should be stream copy.
    Hope this helps.

  4. Will the files play before you edit? If I understand you correctly Womble will edit the files but the edited files won't play. Please give as much info as you can so we can help you.

  5. Thanks, all for the quick replies: Been using the ATI AIW 7500 for video capture for about 2 years; just click on the "record" button. I believe it uses ATIMMC.exe, since I can't record without it. Unedited files play, edited files don't, with one exception: those run through mpeg-vcr will play, but sound and video are very jerky, as though I dropped a lot of frames. But I'm running a 2 Gb cpu, 1 Gb pc2700 ram, 2 x 120 Gb HDDs @7200 rpm.
The WinTV-PVR card on the other machine was just put in service, so it has no history other than these attempts to edit.
The ATI card has had compatibility issues, with Pinnacle Studio 8 and with Nero NVE, so I captured a file (standard MPG format) and moved it to the Hauppauge system for editing; I also tried the reverse. All edited files give a black screen with the error messages posted.
I will have to check the capture settings on the Hauppauge system later; I only recall : 352x240, bit rate 1150 kbps constant, 29.97 fps; audio is 44.1 k, stereo, 224 kbps. Can't think of any other pertinent info.

EDIT: GOT IT WORKING! After re-checking all settings, I decided to try my AverDVD card (as a last resort). Found that I still had some residual files, which the install program removed. When I tried again, everything worked as it should. It does seem that the MPEG2VCR program is more suited to what I am trying to do; Thank you all for your efforts.
