  1. Hi all ,

we are a small company in Brazil and we need to send a material to Voom cable TV in USA , they asked us to output it in HDCam , there is only 1 company here that can do that for us and the cost is extremally high , so we contacted another company in USA to output that material for us . They asked that we send the material in MPEG2 19,4 mb/sec , our resolution is 1920X1080 and the audio is dolby surround 5.1 coded in AC3 and need to be at the same mpeg2 file . I tried Premiere pro to do that , but even after setting the profile and level to high , premiere does not give us the option to get a value of CBR greater then 14mb/sec and the software reduces the output resolution to 1920X960 , and I have no ideia how to do that with After Effects . We only have these 2 softwares that can help in the output , but we can still invest between US$500.00 and US$1000.00 in a new software or plugin if necessary. Please any help would be greatly appreciated .

    Thanks in advance,

    Adriano Santos.

  2. What format is the source material in? AfterFX 6.0 does support HDTV 1920x1080 and will output in this format but I am not sure about compression limits AfterFX may have for mpeg2. I am not at work but can check later.

edit: now that I think about it I don't ever remember AfterFX having the ability to export mpeg2, not native to the program anyway. I never use AfterFX to encode I always export non-compressed then encode elsewhere.

Also, since when does mpeg2 support HDTV?

  3. Thank you for your answer,

well i have no ideia if MPEG2 is the best way to output the material to HDTV , I really need help about HDTV export . Is it possible to output the material uncompressed and the AC3 audio encoded with the uncompressed AVI ? The uncompressed AVI will be very big for a 5 minutes material ? How do you send your material to HDTV ? a sequence of images ? i noticed also that 1080 is not compatible with MPEG2 i think it needs to be 1088. Do you think i can send the material to them in MPEG4 format ? If i send it in MPEG4 can i encode the AC3 audio with the file ?
sorry for the amount of questions , i'm really lost and need help to output the material ASAP.

    Thank you again

  4. Someone just talked with me about this plugin for premiere:
    http://www.pixeltools.com/hdtv.html

it seams that will do exactly what we need , export to MPEG2 in HDTV format. Anyone already used it ? Just to know , because it costs US$995.00 and is a lot to invest in a plugin that may not satisfy our needs.

don't buy it -- for a varity of reasons ...

just get sony vegas +dvda and you can output HDTV MP&HL 1080i (or p) at whatever bit rate you want in mpeg2 format ...

you will also find it a lot nicer to work with for HD ...

you can also output the audio as 5.1 ac3 with the same app ..

they may want the mpeg2 and ac3 multiplexed together as a transport stream .. you will need a multiplex app for that. if so i can help you with some suggestions ..

find out how they want the file , as raw (seperate ac3 and m2v), program or transport ..

i'm suprised they don't accept the audio as wav stubs on disk or da88 and mpeg2 HDTV or d-beta instead ...

mpeg2 supports MUCH MUCH higher than HDTV resolutions ...

  8. Thank you very much for your answer BJ_M ,

i'll enter in contact with them and ask them if they need the MPEG2 file multiplexed as a transport stream , but if you can help me giving an ideia of app for that i'll greatly appreciate it . I'll take a look at sony vegas also it seams that this is the piece of software that we will need . I'll talk with them about the audio in separated .wav files , i think that i only need to have them already mixed.

    Thank you again.

    transport stream multiplex apps :

manzanita (the best, perfect for hdtv - remember to set VBV values correctly)

mpeg2vcr (not always compliant for hdtv - many buffer issues, BUT will work for software playback)

mainconcept encoder will mux to a transport stream -- but not with ac3 ....only mpeg audio .. and only as you encode.

alcorn mcbride -- only for hdtv encoding and multiplexing.. encoder not so great , but does multiplex perfectly (uses manzinita engine) ..

if there are other software applications -- im not aware of them -- i use manzanita (as you may guess) ... http://www.lilapple.com/products/products.htm

VOOM owes a copy of manzanta i'm pretty sure - so if you sent them a m2v file and a ac3 file -- they should be able to mux it themselves ..

even sonic foundry and sony and just about everyone else uses it for transport streams .. but it will cost more than the encoder/editor.

  10. Thank you very much again for the valueable information BJ_M ,

now I have enough data to explain to all here what we need to do. I'll try the m2v with the ac3 file and send to Voom and ask if they will accept them.

  13. Hi BJ_M,

I download a demo version of sony Vegas and (at least in the demo version) I cannot set the program to work with 1920X1080 (the maximum accepted is 800X800) . Is there something i'm doing wrong or when i purchase it i'll have this resolution option ?

    Adriano Santos

Edit : Nevermind i downloaded the version from sony website and now i have this resolution preset.

  14. so even if your audios are stereo, you must create a 5-1 ac3 file?

    thanks
