1) can I confirm that DVD RAM does not have the problem/less data corruption present in packet writing for DVD RW ( and it allows drag & drop/editing within the DVD RAM )
2) whereas for dvd rw I cannot drag & drop /editing unless I use Nero In CD which has a tendency for data corruption due to packet writing softwares

I use DVD-RAM as portable data transport container only. I have tried CD/DVD-RW with packet writing software with almost all available apps starting back with Adaptec's crappy DirectCD up to latest B's Clip (rebadged Nero InCD anyway) - and all of them fail at one point, usually when the data you moved to -RW is very important
DVD-RAM never has failed me this way, and with their minimum 100,000 re-writes I think I still have many years before my oldest -RAMs start to fall apart. -
I am overwriting 1000 files on a frequent basis
2) Should I use FAT 32 or UDF 1.5 to format
Do you happen to be use panasonic RAM or Maxwell -
At first, for strictly-data discs, I used tp format them in UDF 1.5, but for long time I use now UDF 2.0 since I bought standalone RAM-based recorder some time ago, and UDF 1.5 formatted discs were not supported there. Anyway UDF 2.0 is as good for data as UDF 1.5 is.
I never used FAT32 on RAMs, I never liked FAT16/32 anyway, IMO its a sick, poorly designed format, and also AFAIR few Mac machines at my workplace can't recognize FAT32 RAMs either.
Most of my RAMs are older Panasonic make, with few TDKs and older 1x Maxells, however since last year (or was it already 2 years ago?) whenever I need new RAMs Im buying only Maxells version 2.1, that supposedly write at 3x (its not true on LG GSA-series writers, they write at about 2-2.5x) -
I am using a LG 4082DVD writer that writes and plays RAM apart from DVD RW, DVD R
I have only options of UDF 1.5 or UDF .2.0
more than 95% of my data is microsoft office word, excel , pdf files and I have never written things on DVD RAM before
1) Can I confirm that UDF 2.0 is much more suitable than UDF 1.5
2) as Panasonic is much cheaper for me compared to maxwell, I hope in terms of tendency of data corruption or stability is NOT A PROBLEM in Panasonic RAM
3) are you saying that some players may not support and read RAM formatted in udf 1.5 ?? -
Suitable for what?
UDF 2.0 is generally for multimedia storage (audio-video).
UDF 1.5 is for data storage. If you try to record on UDF1.5 formatted disc on a standalone recorder, it may not recognise it or may say 'disc in a wrong format' or something like that, and give you an option to format it again in UDF2.0 (i think that was the case with my old panny recorder). To my knowledge any PC should not have any problem with either UDF version formatted RAMs, and you can use any of them for data storage.
Personally I prefer UDF 2.0 because there is always a chance that any of my RAM discs may end up being used in a standalone recorder, and it is good format for data storage as well. There are no compatibility issues between UDF 1.5 and 2.0, at least I haven't found any, all my UDF2.0 discs are accessible on all computers at work, and some of the UDF1.5 formatted discs I bring home work OK on my home LG 4082 writers.
Panasonic media are very reliable. If they are much cheaper than the other brands in your area, and if you don't mind 1x writing speed, go for it.
3) are you saying that some players may not support and read RAM formatted in udf 1.5 ?? -
THANKS
glad that panasonic RAM is as reliable and less prine to corrpution as MAxwell
Panasonic RAM 2-3x speed is USD 4 cheaper than Maxwell RAM 3x -
I am trying to format the RAM disc using UDF 2.0
I Right click on the “Removable Disk” icon ( my computer ) allocated to the DVDRAM disc.
** The format option does not appear . how do I format this RAM
When Nero In CD is installed , the in CD format option appears but that is not UDF 2.0 formatting ? -
Nero InCD is a packet-writing program, for -RWs, Nero has nothing to do wih -RAMs.
Youre probably using WinXP's own RAM drivers, or some other RAM drivers if you have other OS.
See here:

This is correct DVD-RAM formatting tool for LG GSA-4082B:
Notice that Nero InCD (icon circled in red) does not work with DVD-RAM media (I have B's Clip on this system instead of InCD, so the icon may look different than your, but it is very same utility). -
I am using win 2000 professional and I still do not know how to format RAM
** I have re-installed the DVD RAM driver from the provided disk under the Win2k folder
1) When I Right click on the “Removable Disk” icon ( my computer ) allocated to the DVDRAM disc. ,** The format option does not appear ( UDF 2.0 etc )
2) When I clicked on DVD FORM ( in the DVD RAM driver program) ..the error message is drive is not connected or disk not inserted ; actual fact is I can even double click on the RAM disk to see what is inside the RAM just that I cannot drag and drop data in RAM
I am using a LG 4082 writer
What I copied from the DVD RAM driver program ( updated Jan 2004)
Driver Software
meiudf.sys - Ver 3.0.9.0
dvdram.sys - Ver 3.1.1.0
Format Software(DVDForm) - Ver 4.1.9.0
Write Protect Tool(WPTool) - Ver 1.1.2.0 -
Don't copy few files, just uninstall the drivers that dont work with your writer and *install* correct ones. Installing will modify your registry entries as well, while copying few files won't.

** I have re-installed the DVD RAM driver from the provided disk under the Win2k folder
The problems are as faced in the last post
I cannot even find a button that will allow me to format the RAM -
Either you have wrong software disc supplied with your drive (you can read my story with wrong software CD I received for my first LG GSA 4082 HERE, theres also link for working RAM drivers for this LG model) or youre just doing/have something else wrong.
It is also important to have all other drivers up-to-date on your system; i.e. it won't work on my older box with Asus P4-T motherboard if I don't update intel 850 chipset drivers on that system right after Win2K installation... -
Tks I will try tonight with link for driver you provided for Win 2000 professional ( win 2 k )
my DVD Ram comes without a cartridge
1) which cause less data corrption
a) editing some 1000 files in RAM , drag & drop files with the RAM disk
Or
b) copy and paste entire DVD RAM to hard disk , editing files , drag & drop files in hard disk , THEN copy to DVD RAM AGAIN ..
2) I recall that DVD RAM is not be able to read ( DATA ) in most older PC DVD ROM drives ?? -
I'd think it depends on how big are your '1000 files' - if theyre all just small files where you edit parts of the code or parts of text, one by one - you can do it on a RAM directly. But if you edit all of your '1000 files' at once, simultaneously, and constantly, throughout the day - then there is no way even fastest 5x DVD-RAM would be fast enough to rewrite them directly on a disc.
Out of all dvd-roms I had, only my very first crappy sony DDU-200 (or something like that) was not able to read anything else than pressed DVDs.
But Im sure there are still some drives unable to read -RAM or -R/RW or +R/RW. Thats what you should check with i.e. videohelp's database of drives for compatibility (if it is still here? there used to be dvd-rom's database in the past, but I dont see it now), or use utility like DVDInfoPro to check your drive's compatibility with various formats.
Now you got time to think of another -RAM related question till aftertomorrow, coz Im outta here (gone fishin, no laptops allowed LOL) - unless some1 else will have patience to continue it ofcoz :P -

Win2K - 2KDrv0213BHAOEMJP.EXE (2,480,085 bytes)
http://updater.bha.co.jp/Clip5Win/2KDrv0213BHAOEMJP.exe
I reinstall the DVD RAM driver( provided by LG) then install the above program provided by your link..THE SAME PROBLEM as the last post happens , cannot find an option to format
2) I also noticed my DVD RAM appears as a CD ( Mei_UDF ) instead of a removable drive ..( bUT I cannot format ) under properties , files system is UDFFS20
3) I tried uninstalling the originally provided by LG , then install the above program ( But it did not install properly_
4) is it because I did not install as an adminstrator ..can you teach me how to install ?
I am using win 2000 professional and I do not have the password or user ID to the administrator ..
a) when I can log in at the windows, I log in as my user ID ( fpm ) and password -
I am using a LG 4082 mounted on an external casing attached to the notebook via a PCMCIA card
what is the advantage /disdavantages of using USB 2.0 vs firewire , especially pertaining to corrupting the data while wriiting with the writer -
I have formatted my RAM disk , and then I try to copy files into RAM by drag and drop files into the "removable drive"
message is
cannot copt " filename" , the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
PLS HELP _ -
I have applied the update for the LG4082 drive that was described in the earlier post (it was the Japanese program meant for Windows XP). I should have known better than to run something that would display text I don't understand
Now my system (Windows XP on IBM A31 laptop) is acting somewhat flaky. The G: drive (the LG4082 is attached via USB 2.0) is intermittently recognized as being present, and TDA either doesn't know it's available as a recorder, or it times out writing to it with a strange "invalid unit number" message after writing a mere 32 sectors. Does anyone know the best approach to backing out what this driver update has done? Note that Control Panel -> System-> Device manager profiles doesn't show this device.

I use my DVD Ram & editing some 1000 files within the RAM
WOuld using FAT 32 to format cause more data corrption eventually as we write/edit files as compared to UDF 1.5/udf 2.0 ?
I think my Win 2000 professional only supports FAT 32 and not UDF 1.5/2.0
2 ) if I am not wrong, in this case FAT 32 would still be a better bet than using NERO in CD ( in terms of chances of producing less data corruption ) -
HI
1) if I am stuck with window 2000 professional now, format the RAM with nero in CD ( not FAT 32 , and I cannot format it with udf 2.0 or 1.5 since not compatable with WIn 2000)
2) if I should install windows XP , format the RAM with udf 2.0
3) can I ask if Windows XP is stable enough ..I hope I will not lose any hard disk info when I install XP ( i am having windows 2000 Pro now )
4) Any problems if now I format 1 RAM disks in nero in cd ( win 2000) , these data will be able to read in Win XP ..
a) once XP is up, i wll transfer data (formerly formatted in nero in CD ) to hard drive and copy it to a RAM formatted by UDF 2.0
b) Once XP is installed , there is also no problem in reformatting this RAM disc( formerly formatted by Nero in CD) by UDF2.0 by erasing all previous data ..** -
Them japanese drivers for LG-4082 that I posted here DO WORK on Win2000, and obviously you can use UDF2.0 with them on Win2000.
Is this best proof for you?
Try what are you doing wrong, or what is wrong or unset on your systembefore posting any stupid remarks like VideoSan's "I should have known better to not do it..." etc etc

HI
Thanks
I have downloaded the following link that you pointed
http://updater.bha.co.jp/Clip5Win/2KDrv0213BHAOEMJP.exe
1) I merely press exe file ( i already have current drivers provided by Manufacturer) ..They could detect my Drive .., prog is in Jap , and could press format in UDF 2.0 ..after 45 min ..error message is it is impossible to write to disk , change the name of properties ...( THIS IS SAME ERROR MESSAGE That I get when I use the original drivers )
2) when I remove drivers provided and double click exe file ..it's some jap error msg which I do not understand
3) could you help with my questions in last post abt using wither FAT 32 or Nero In CD .. -
@faithfoo
You have all answers in mine & others posts in this and related threads
Nero InCD, Adaptec/Roxio DirectCD, B's Clip - all those programs are for packet-writing onto -RW media. If you want to format -RAM in FAT32 or UDF1.x then use your Windows to do so.
I had nothing but trouble with DirectCD and InCD programs in the past, data was corrupted, entire discs were lost etc etc - thats why at home I have moved from -RW to -RAM as soon as I could have afford it; and studio I work for has been always using -RAM media, our IT engineer there *wisely* suggested always to stay away from any packet-writing programs like InCD (and I agree). Personally I have B's Clip 5 on one of my machines (its the same proggie as Nero INCD, just in case if its needed). Even though its not used - it crashes by itself once a month forcing to reboot this machine.
I never use anything else but DVDform to format any new -RAM medias. I have never tried to use InCD with -RAM, and I never will.
I cant help you any more than I have already wrote in this and related threads.
BTW - it is in your interest to have your *profile* updated whenever you seek help on this or any board. I spent a week of daily emails and chats trying to help one dude in France to install it on his system - just to discover in the end that he didnt even had any Service Pack on his Windows 2000! While his profile stated he has W2KSP4 and totally different motherboard... what a waste of time.
Japanese drivers do work on Win2K, I have 3 machines at home running on them, as well as another bunch of machines at work.
If it doesnt work on your system - obviously you have something missing or unset on your system, you should search for the reasons related to your mainboard chipset drivers, service packs for your OS etc etc. Solution must be somewhere there. I dont know your settings nor hardware to help you better than you can do it yourself. -
Sorry about the trouble

faithfoo:
i too have gone through the dvd-ram/DVD-RW woes. i regularly trasport files. the best thing i ever did was to bypass the dvd format altogether and buy a 10 gig HD and an external usb/ firewire enclosure. format 1/2 in FAT 32 and the other in NTFS.
this way you have a portable system that rarely fails.drink up....the world's about to end -

Ideally one day it will be some small size few giger memory card with USB2 or Firewire connector (or anything faster in the future)...
