Why do so many of you have something like "right here", or "sitting in front of my computer", or "in hell" or something like that for your location in your profile.

    For example:

All three of these whorish members have vague locations. Maybe they think it is cute. Maybe because they are so beloved on this OT forum, they think everyone should already know which god forsaken desert they live in.

But still, isn't it kind of pointless? Isn't the whole idea of the location entry to put some kind of regional perspective into our discussions? It also helps when answering standards and region questions where location information is often necessary for a good reply.

Welcome back friend. This board was getting a little too warm and fuzzy without you around. It is interesting how even though you haven't been posting as much, you have managed to monitor all my posts enough to see that I have "started bitching way too much". I am glad someone is paying attention.

Anyway, you are the best example of this location problem because you never give your real location. I think this is probably because you are in some really shitty place, like a gay Turkish brothel contracting AIDS.

Did someone piss in your cornflakes six butts? I mean, complaining about what people put under their location?

Find something worthy of complaining about, or keep it to yourself. This is a forum, not a civil service exam

no, i just saw this post, and the one about the most memorable threads were you were like "the ones when i get help".. and vaguely recall some from the past. seriously though, stop.

by the way, i live in sweden, just incase you were wondering. i've been here for the past 14 months hunting down baldrick, but he has proven to be rather elusive..

Wow. I was not expecting such a backlash. To be honest, I was posting kind of tongue-in-cheek, that is to say not entirely seriously. I guess sarcasm often dosn't register in text.

If location is something sensitive that people don't want to reveal online, that's fine. My only point was that sometimes, I wish I knew where the posters were from. There is nothing "wrong" with having a comment in your location nor is there anything wrong with leaving it blank.

Also, I am not complaining or bitching. Today, my basement got some flooding, my weeks worth of mail was stolen, my cable stopped working indefinitely, the lights went out (back now), it was too rainy to go buy tobacco, and I thought my hard drive failed. That is the stuff I should be bitching about. I honestly couldn't give a flying **** what people put in their location profile. They can do whatever they want. I was just trying to start some healthy discussion, which I guess backfired since the only discussion is how I am an *******.

Learn how to use smileys then, noob!

Seriously, if you leave a statement without any emoticon, people will assume it's serious. Your post had nothing to indicate it was a "j/k" post.

Jeex, here is a copy of my post about my best videohelp moment:
My best moments at VideoHelp are when I actually get helped with my problem, which is surprisingly quite often.
How in the hell is that "bitching"???? I mention how the forum members are genuinely helpful at videohelp, UNLIKE in some other forums. Let me dissect it for you:

My best moments at VideoHelp are when I actually get helped with my problem
Here, I am acknowledging how I have been helped by the members of videohelp. Just recently, these kind people have helped me buy a backup power supply, find an alternative to Windows Explorer, and begin to fix my bass amp. This in addition to helping with VCDs in the past, and DVDs in the present.

    which is surprisingly quite often.
Here, I am saying that I was surprised in the helpful nature of the forum members, in contrast to my previous forum experiences.

AND THAT IS ALL. NO SARCASM, NO BULLSHIT. I may be bitching now but I wasn't then.

My location often changes based on some of the OT threads that are taking place. After the nite Cap and I had my location denoted one thing.. after getting reamed by Indo one day it was changed to reflect that beating.. I often look forward to what peoples location change to in response to certain threads he or she may have been involved in.

Plus .... most of us already know the general vacinity of most of the posters here. Lets see.. Indo is Afganistan, Cap is Mexico, Tekkie is Canada, Northcat is using Sadams hole in Najaff right now, Dorm is, well I'm not sure where he is... Me... I'm wanting a cabinet post.

    IMO

What a terrible story. Makes me especially nervous when posting on Politick.org since a lot of the stuff I say would probably put me on quite a few fanatics' hit lists.

I think first name is about as far as I would reveal on a forum in terms of personal information. Last name, email, workplace are all no-no's for me. I put my location as Brooklyn, NY, a city with 2.5 million people, so that shouldn't be so dangerous in terms of information.

I never even say what college I go to. I am as paranoid about this stuff as I am about my DVDR quality.

And I noticed that since I started this thread, Cap put his real location in his profile. I guess you have to be more diplomatic when you are a mod.

OK, so you go to college in Brooklyn, and we have your first name.... I'm certain that if I put some time into this, I could find you. Are you scared yet? I would prove it, but just don't feel the need to spend my time on that type of thing right now. It's not the easiest of things, but not the hardest either. You should change your location to NY or simply NorthEast USA. I'm sure if you search through all your posts, and the links that they leave, it would get much easier, but again, that is part of the work.

I don't even use a real email for most of these types of forums, and never allow direct references to be made. No IM or IRC or AIM. Don't do chat for a few reasons, at least not unless in proxy mode.

You never know when there is a lurker out there wanting to do you harm, maybe just for the fun of it. There are some real sadistic screwjobs out there (maybe in here too ). This place may seem all friendly on the surface, and for the most part it is, but the unseen personas can be very disturbed.

This reminds me of the lunatic sniper character in The Jerk who flips through the phonebook and randomly picks a person to kill. He chooses Steve Martin's character Navin Johnson and a funny scene ensues. "HE HATES THESE CANS!" Too bad people like that actually exist.

I agree, it's too bad that some people take things personally. I avoid flaming of any kind, because you never know what kind of nut jobs will follow you all over the forum harassing you. I don't have any bad feelings about anyone here, after all it is an anonymous forum (well, semi-anonymous anyway) and people can state their opinions in ways that they wouldn't otherwise.

I don't doubt that a lot of people here are not like their online personas at all, maybe the most outspoken ones are the shyest in real life, who knows?

That's why it's good to have moderators, who can at least try to keep the peace, when things start to get out of hand. I try to think twice before posting something, about how it might look to someone reading it for the first time, not knowing my state of mind and if I'm kidding or not. Even then I'm not sure sometimes. Thus, the excessive use of the emoticons in some of my posts, to try and be sure that people know my intent. I think that helps a little.

The main reason why I came to this forum in the first place was to try and help people out with any electronics expertise I might be able to offer, and just to hang out and have a little fun. I've rarely asked for any help except on rare occasion. I'm not heavily into most of this stuff, and I've been able to figure out most of what I need on my own and an occsional guide reading.

All that said, I feel sorry for people that get flamed for no reason, just asking a simple question. Forum ettiquite (sp.) suggests that if you have the slightest inkling that what you're asking could be taken the wrong way, the use of emoticons might help to alleviate it.

I think in every 10th or 20th post of mine I've listed I live in Las Vegas. If anyone wants to know, all they have to do is ask. What if I move. Then they're really up the creak. Plus, my location describes where I am pretty well.

The last thing I want is some ******* tracking me down to discuss an Internet matter in more detail. If said individual is so hurt by something I've said on the Internet that he feels the need to get revenge on me by trying to kick my ass...

    1) He will probably walk right past the 'No Trespassing' signs because he's an ******* who doesn't know any better,

    2) He will probably ignore the big pretty vehicle in the driveway with the red and blue klaxon lights on the roof. Of course, if said vehicle is not present, or is next door, he probably won't pay any attention anyway, so who gives a shit.

    3) He'll knock on the door with a tough-guy attitude, maybe even talking loudly calling out my name, and God help him if that's my REAL name he uses, because if he does ALL THAT RESEARCH to hunt me down and he STILL mised all the clues as to why he SHOULDN'T be on my property in the first place...

    4) He'll get shot. And if he's not careful, more than once. And if it's my wife he scares with his tough-guy attitude, she'll probably let the dog eat his balls. And God help him if my brother is home; an AR-15 can do a lot of cosmetic damage to a human being.

And I'll just have to produce the e-mails/PMs/posts that prove he had motive, opportunity and intent. Case closed, no charges filed.

    Welcome to Arizona, ********!

No, I DO worry about psycho-fucks on the Internet doing that. I never used my real name from day one on this forum, and after reading what Capmaster went through, I'm glad I didn't.
