  1. Before I buy TMPGENC, I was wondering if there is a way to capture the mpeg from my capture device, digital video creator 150, with the bitrate and dvd ntsc specs that I want. This way I could then just use cuttermaran to edit out the parts I want and then simply import into dvd author gui and burn. I could cut out the rendering process. This is all assuming that the video quality is good. Is any of this even possible? If so, is there a capture program that you can adjust the bitrate with? Or is there no way to get around rendering the video? Thanks

By "rendering" I'm assuming you mean saving it as a DVD-compliant MPEG. If your capture device is using DVD-compliant settings (see the guides section) you should be able to use an app like VideoRedo to cut out unwanted stuff and save as an MPEG that is fully compliant. I've also had success using Womble MPEG Video Wizard for quick edits like that. Both are frame-accurate editors so sync should survive just fine.

Capping apps depend on the hardware support. Certainly you can fine-tune the capture parameters and even tweak things like I and P frames if you're so inclined. But you should already have a capture app that came with the hardware that you know is already compatible.

The capture app that came with my digital video creator 150 is called moviestar. Its pretty bad for specifiying capture. All you can do is set the time and to save it to a dvd compliant mpeg 2. The main thing I would use TMPGENC, maybe you know another program that does this, would be to lower the video bitrate, thus reducing the file size and thus being able to fit more video on a dvd. I know there are a couple of programs like dvd patcher and restream that can change the bitrate but they don't change the file size. Is there any program that can change the bitrate of an mpeg 2 and reduce the file size proportionally without rerendering?

Author your dvd and use dvdshrink. Also rejig will reduce the file size.

  5. What do I use in Rejig, file mode? Do I have to rerender with Rejig?

Use file mode and add the mpg and then set the file size with 2 pass mode,it will give you a m2v which is the video and you also can extract the chosen audio also.

  7. So just specifiy the video output size. I tried a small file and it went pretty fast. But will it take awhile with long files, like an hour?

  8. I checked the bitrate of the file that I ran through rejig, and the bitrate is still 8 mb/s, the same as the original even though the file size is half. What is reducing the file size?
