Never paid much attention before because my Pioneer 105 rips fast. The problem is I'm starting to come across some discs that the Sony is a bit more forgiving with and will read completely. The downside is with official Sony firmware I'm locked at 2x. Is there any firmware out there that unlocks the Sony?
TIA

My sony dru500a is locked at 2x ripping, always have been, using all firmwares. i think its most dvd writers that are loked at 2x. iv never come across a hacked firmware for higher ripping speeds
best to use a seperate dvd rom for ripping. i use a lite on 166s and have achieved 16x rip.
