Lately my Sony burner has only been allowing me to burn at 4x....it used to allow up to 12x. I have only been using CD-RWs lately (I ran out of CD-Rs) Is this some new issue with Nero and my computer or is it just detecting CD-RWs and therefore burning at a lower speed? HELP!

Generally CD-RWs are burnt at a lower speed than regular CD-Rs, although a reduction from 12x to 4x seems a bit much to me. It would probably be a good idea for you to look up the specs of your CD-writer to see what they say about CD-RWs.

Yes, the speed rating for CD-RWs is a code on the disc that is read by the burner. The burner will then refuse to burn at a speed higher than what the media is rated for, and will report that to any burning software that attempts to write to the disc. If your Sony can burn 10x media (the middle number when you see something like 12x10x32), then buy that media.
