I've looked at the writers section and reviewed some of the posts here in the forum. I'm going to be getting a new burner soon, and I kind of like the idea of being able to use DVD-RAM for backups and other things. Also I've seen some good clearance deals on RAM discs at my local WM. Almost everyone speaks highly of the NEC 2510, but I was wondering if there's anything that it can do that the LG 4120B doesn't do, or does much better than the LG to warrant forgoing DVD-RAM.

    TIA

  3. The NEC is more popular so it does have the advantage of getting more unofficial support(hacked firmware). Hacked firmware helps the NEC have a higher tolerance toward lower quality media and I think it allows it to add bitsetting for +R. Other than that I see real advantage over the LG. CDRinfo released a review for botht he NEC and the LG. If you stay away from low quality media (Princo, CMC and the like) you should have no issues with either.

  4. The most popular aspect of Herries hacked firmwares is that it supports burning many types of 4X certified media at 8X.
