I have several home videos rendered as MPGs in Vegas 4.0 with timeline markers where I'd like the chapters to start. Are there any DVD authoring applications aside from Sony's DVD Architect (which I can't afford) that will recognize those markers as chapters?

I have the same problem. I own DVD Architect, and I can't stand it (prefer DVDLab). It's not perfect, but here's what I do:
    - Open Vegas, and click on each chapter point, one by one.
    - Copy the timecode to the clipboard.
    - Paste timecode to a text file using Notepad or Wordpad.
    - Use the "import chapters" feature in DVDLab to open the text file and place the chapters.

Found this trick on the Vegas Forum - easier than doing it manually as I suggested earlier:

In the view menu select Edit Details or hit Alt+6.
Select "markers" from the pulldown box.
Copy and paste to a text file.
Import chapters to any other authoring program

    Hope this helps.

Is there any way to import chapters to DVD Architect?

    yes... I found two ways..
1 - for only a few markers, manually copy/paste the markers into dvda..navigate into the video asset and then you will see the timecode in the scrubber..if you double click it, it will allow a paste or type into the field, then click on the add marker icon...this is best for just a few markers

2 - if you have vegas (which you probably do since I don't think dvda is sold stand alone) there is a slightly longer work around which involves importing the markers into vegas and then using vegas to create the marker file which dvda will look for...vegas creates markers when it renders, or if you don't need to render, there is a script you can download which will let vegas create a marker file w/o rendering...the steps to create the marker file and import into dvda is detailed here:
