Divx to fast DVD gives a picture size of 640 x 480? I thought that a standard DVD was 720 x 480. Checking ffmpeg it shows that the video tab was set on 720 x 480?

quicktime translates 720 x 480 rectangular pixels to 620 x 480 square pixels because your computer monitor displays square pixels. Don't worry, your mpeg is the right size, just use one of the many mpeg info tools to show you the true dimensions if you need to confirm it.
