  1. I am very new at this and am having a problem. I hope someone can help. I'm trying to convert a windows media video9 file that is an ASF type to VCD mpeg. I'm using TMPGEnc. The encoding begins and runs for a while but then eveything just stops and the screen goes black. TMPGEnc stops and freezes up. I have raised the Direct Show priority until it is at the top of the list but this has not helped. At times I have been able to convert these types of files and am not doing anything different now. So I don't know why it will work one time and not the other. If the file is corrupted, how do I find out where this is so, what the problem is and which program do I need to fix it? I tried to load the file into VirtualDub but an error message came up saying the file was not supported because MS owns the patent on the ASF file format. If this is the case, why does TMPGEnc work at time and at other times won't? Can anyone help?

If its only a VCD that you want wont NERO 6 do it?

You could also use ASFTOOLS (for early asfs/wmvs) and its freeware.

    Also PROCODER will convert wmv's.

It depends on the wmv (asf) file itself...later ones are not transcodable without 'royalties' being paid to MS in the encoder lisence.....and MS wants the whole world to use its new baby (and its got very deep pockets esp. in court).....but when MS was just another software company it didnt care that much....hence your problem with some do...some don't....depends what version of the codec created the wmv/asf.
